In this role, you will be joining the Display & Optics team that is responsible for the design, development, and productization of the display systems in AR, VR, and Portal family of products.
You will be leading an engineering organization composed of growing teams of optical scientists/engineers and process engineers, with specialties in lens design, fabrication, coating process development, electro-optic devices, and optical device integration. The organization is a function team supporting the product teams working in a matrix structure. The organization is a center of excellence for advanced optics and fabrication, pushing the state-of-the-art on new designs and new processes in ultra-miniaturized components and modules.
R&D Lead Manager, Advanced Optics & Fabrication Responsibilities
* Lead a growing organization composed of managers and individual contributors spanning a diverse set of technical domains in optics, material science, high precision fabrication, and optical simulation.
* Drive the teams charter, strategic direction, vision, and priorities through an understanding of the product teams roadmaps.
* Translate product roadmap needs to R&D activities with new designs, processes, tools, and materials.
* An exceptional problem solver for organizational matters and in leading the team through complex technical matters.
* Anticipate future needs and initiate the development and implementation of novel approaches that lead to significant product impact.
* Lead the innovation with own team and through several external partnerships across different geographies and time zones.
* Develop tight relationships with cross-functional and sister organizations. Lead and interface with inter- and intra-organization partners/stakeholders for engineering issues/development to help solve technical problems, and in shaping the future products, or address new changes.
* Develop comprehensive understanding of the different product areas and apply experience, leadership, knowledge, and influence to drive for effective decision making and fast resolution.
* Attract, develop, mentor, and retain a strong team to execute on the vision.
* Manage budget, headcount growth, interviewing, and hiring.
* 25% travel post pandemic.
Minimum Qualifications
* Ph.D. degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Materials Science.
* 7+ years of people management experience of highly technical individuals.
* 10+ years of experience working in an optics, display, or related field.
* Proven technical skills in one or more of the following: lens design, lens fabrication, optical coatings, lithography, lasers, polarization optics, optoelectronic devices, liquid crystal devices.
* Proven leadership skills with self-awareness, situational/organizational awareness.
* Experience influencing a great latitude on outcomes. Experience presenting and defending complicated or delicate issues.
* Role model for direct reports.
* Proven communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
* Adept at working in a fast-paced environment and in early stages of product development, and with a high level of ambiguity.
