The ArmorLock NVMe SSD, released in late 2020, is only the beginning of Western Digital's consumer product security technologies. The ArmorLock platform raises the bar for consumer and mobile security with advancements such as memory-safe embedded firmware, open-source and third-party audited cryptography, formally verified cryptographic protocols, hardware-backed key storage, and containerized manufacturing line software.

As a Principal Engineer in the Product Security Engineering group, you will join a remote-first team that is developing the next generation of Western Digital's consumer security platforms. You will have the opportunity to work on the cutting edge as you participate in the design verification and firmware enablement of a brand-new hardware security module based on a custom RISC-V core. As part of an integrated team that covers everything from the manufacturing flow to client applications, you'll be challenged to work with everything from wireless microcontrollers to cryptographic libraries to NVMe SSDs, and a firmware stack that is centered around Rust and embedded Java.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Own moderately complex security firmware and software components and projects from design to implementation
* Interpret, review, and contribute to specifications, manuals, and data sheets, and develop implementations from scratch without sample or reference code
* Develop firmware for RISC-V ASICs and wireless microcontrollers in C, Rust, and embedded Java
* Develop software, including client SDKs, manufacturing tools, and internal testing tools, in Java, Kotlin, and Swift
* Debug firmware using tools such as evaluation boards, JTAG probes, simulators, and FPGAs
* Integrate with manufacturing flows, and ensure that security and reliability are maintained from the manufacturing line to the end user
* Document and test your components, and contribute to the overall quality efforts of the organization

REQUIRED:

* Motivated self-starter with an ability to quickly learn and adapt to new types of development projects
* Proven track record of delivery in environments that span multiple technology layers
* Fearless approach to learning new technologies and the demonstrated ability to bring your skills and experience to new domains
* Ability and desire to understand what's really going on under the hood and blaze new trails outside the familiar confines of vendor-provided IDEs and sample code packages
* 7+ years of experience in professional or open source software engineering

PREFERRED:

* Rust, C, and Java development in an embedded environment
* Bluetooth Low Energy development or another wireless protocol
* Mobile or desktop application development in modern languages such as Swift or Kotlin
* ARM or RISC-V assembly
* Cryptography and cryptographic protocols, including symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, AEAD modes, signatures, and KDFs
* Secure boot, secure firmware update, attestation, hardware security modules, PIV tokens, and other cryptographic firmware concepts
* Sandboxes, code signing, certificate pinning, and other mobile application security concepts
* FIPS 140-2/140-3 or Common Criteria experience
* Basic hardware knowledge such as low-speed serial interfaces (I2C/SPI/UART), GPIOs, pulse-width modulation, and basic DC power concepts
* Protocol-level understanding of modern high-speed serial interfaces such as USB and PCIe
* Embedded development from scratch, including linker scripts, JTAG, and GDB
* Firmware bring up and test in ASIC prototyping environments such as Palladium and HAPS
