Description

The Chemist , under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, provides technical and administrative assistance for Laboratory operations to promote safe, productive, efficient and timely analytical services to Refinery Operating, Business Analysis, and Technical Services Divisions, in adherence to established Company guidelines, policies procedures and applicable governmental regulations.

Responsibilities May Include

* Technical resource for laboratory equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Managing spare parts inventory for lab equipment, instrumentation, etc.

* Technical resource for set-up of laboratory instrumentation; coordinating instrument data transfers with the existing lab data acquisition infrastructure.

* Developing and maintaining an effective maintenance program and protocols for laboratory instrumentation.

* Being a point of contact for laboratory support systems, problems, and repairs.

* Performing required quality control activities to ensure instrumentation is calibrated and operating. Documenting, tracking and reporting on calibration status and maintenance activities.

* Performing and/or coordinating with outside labs routine and specialized testing.

* Coordinating the development and implementation of quality control procedures to monitor the process control of Laboratory operations.

* Counseling and consulting with Laboratory Leadership Team, Process Supervisors, Engineers, and Unit Operators. Providing technical assistance for project work and/or operational problems dealing with chemistry and/or instrumental analyses.

* Overseeing operation of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) including any necessary troubleshooting, as well as reporting preliminary and final batch reports to customers.

* Developing new, and modifying existing, analytical procedures to assist the laboratory in providing accurate and precise analyses to support refinery goals.

* Performing quality assurance work in adherence to the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program to provide technically sound results to Laboratory customers.

* Responsible for the safety/health of self and those working with you, promoting health and safety of others, and performing quality work in a safe and environmentally conscientious manner.

* Responsible for complying with Company policies and procedures, established standards, and governmental regulations (Federal, State, & Local).

* Stepping in as temporary supervisor when necessary.

* Training lab personnel on lab analytical methods and other procedures.

* Keeping current on industry trends in analytical instrumentation and make recommendations to ensure the laboratory is providing the best possible analytical services.

* Being available for off hours support to the refinery/laboratory.

* Shipping hazardous and non-hazardous samples and equipment.

Position Requirements

Basic/Required:

* Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

* Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or comparable science or Engineering degree

* 5 or more years of analytical technical experience within a laboratory working environment

* Hands on analytical instrumentation troubleshooting and repair

* Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

Preferred:

* 5 or more years of experience in a petroleum lab

* Have proven expertise in specific areas of petroleum analysis: spectroscopy, chromatography, physical testing, knock engines, environmental water testing, LIMS, titrations

* Experience working with octane engines

* Supervisory experience

* Ability to work with cross functional teams and groups

* Accepts ownership and is accountable and delivers on commitments

* Experience with computer-based instrumentation

* Good written and oral communication skills

* Organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and to balance short term and long-term priorities

The Alliance Refinery is located on the Mississippi River in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, approximately 25 miles southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. The singletrain facility includes crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, aromatics and delayed coking units. It processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. The refinery receives domestic crude oil through a combination of pipelines, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, home heating oil and anode grade petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers in the southeastern and eastern United States through major pipeline systems and by barge. Refined products are exported primarily to Latin America by waterborne cargo.

In addition, this segment generates electricity and provides merchant power into the Texas market. Phillips 66 was founded in 1875 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.
