SSSD has an opening for a Principal Electromechanical (Opto-mechanical) Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Devens, MA.
As a Responsible Engineer (RE), you will support the successful execution of a production program involving complex opto-mechanical hardware for a Class A space mission. This role will require a high-power individual with an intrinsic motivation to excel and a strong engineering acumen.
Essential Functions:
* Support the on-time execution of a production program in a technical leadership role
* Provide on-site engineering engagement at supplier facility during hardware assembly and test
* Collaborate across a diverse geographical team on a daily basis to remove obstacles and resolve issues
* Identify and proactively mitigate technical and schedule risks, while also pursuing value-added opportunities
* Conduct first article amp; flight verification (inspection, analysis, and testing) of complex opto-mechanical products
* Support Material Review Board and Failure Review Board investigations and corrective actions
* Develop innovative and robust engineering solutions with an emphasis on hardware producibility
* Implement process changes which improve the assembly and test of novel opto-mechanical products
* Work with agility and minimal direction to establish priorities and complete tasks on schedule
* Employ strong interpersonal and communication skills while leading an integrated product team
* Demonstrate accountability to obtain results and achieve major program objectives

Qualification
Basic Qualifications:
* Must have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 5 years of engineering professional experience; OR M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 3 years of engineering professional experience; OR PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university
* Must have 3 or more years of experience involving development and manufacturing of precision electromechanical or opto-mechanical hardware for end-use in harsh environmental conditions (e.g. Aerospace and Defense)
* Experience dispositioning non-conforming electromechanical or opto-mechanical hardware at the component level taking into consideration system level impacts
* Experience with Geometric Dimensioning amp; Tolerance (GD amp;T) applications per ASME Y.14-5 and tolerance stack-up analysis
* The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level
Preferred Qualifications:
* M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university
* Active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level with a background investigation date within 6 years, OR an active U.S. Government SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years
* Experience with decomposition and verification of precision alignment requirements
* Experience with selection and use of materials to achieve athermal optical systems
* Experience with structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis pertaining to opto-mechanical hardware
* Experience with application of Design for Excellence (DFX) pertaining to opto-mechanical hardware
* Experience with metrology tools, interferometers, theodolites, coordinate measuring machines, laser trackers, Faro/Romer arms, alignment scopes, autocollimators, etc.
* Cognizance of design, manufacturing, and verification processes associated with Class A Space hardware
