Our Research Scientists are our Inventors. We identify and target steps in disease mechanisms or pathways that could be inhibited or enhanced. Under minimal direction and supervision, this candidate will perform highly technical surgical procedures; provide clinical care, and preventative medicine programs for all species; consultation and collaboration with investigators for animal model and protocol development; development and training of technical staff. Primary activities include, but are not limited to:

Primary Responsibilities:

* Uses technical and scientific expertise to plan, conduct, and summarize complex nonclinical studies and projects and prepares and distributes appropriate documentation.

* Conducts laboratory procedures with minimal direction and supervision in compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulatory guidance's (GXPs), safety guidelines, and company policies and procedures.

* Determines possible solutions to difficult technical issues and, after consultation with appropriate staff, implements these solutions.

* Uses judgment to identify and solve problems of moderate complexity. May make assignments to staff members in order to resolve specific problems.

* Collaborates and exchanges information and works with peers, both within department and outside department and utilizes the services of internal and external specialists to achieve individual and laboratory objectives.

* Represents functional group on cross-functional project teams, monitors external trends and developments; develops contacts external to the Area and/or Company.

* Independently balances multiple projects while preserving the quality and integrity of each.

* Applies knowledge across multiple therapeutic or technical areas.

* Functions effectively as a team leader and contributes independently as required by the needs of the project. Assists in management of project team objectives, schedules and deliverables. Trains and mentors others on complex technical procedures and experiments.

* Contributes to development and revision of written policies and procedures.

* Participates in recommended educational and training opportunities to enhance their understanding of external activities/new technologies that relate to their area objectives.

Within a specific area, role may also include the following activities:

* Produce experimental surgical models and provide oversight to staff performing surgeries, technical procedures, and anesthesia.

* Provide veterinary services for our Research & Development Division's animals consistent with professional standards and assures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and guidelines for animal care and use.

* May coordinate the function of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

* Conduct veterinary studies and assignments, receiving only general supervision.

* Interpret information supplied by investigatory procedures and recommend subsequent studies designed to clarify problem areas.

* Determine possible courses of action to be pursued.

* Plan and schedule experiments designed to provide solutions to the problems posed.

* Assign specific portions of problems to various staff members. May utilize the services of specialists such as technical information, scientific information, biometric personnel, etc.

* Responsible for several independent or related problems simultaneously.

* Develop additional technical competence through association with fellow senior staff members.

* Provide consultation governing the appropriate care and use of laboratory animals.

* Collaborate on the selection and development of animal models.

* Develop and manage animal husbandry programs.

* Collaborates closely with principal investigators within our Research & Development Division.

* Educate scientific, animal care and ancillary staff.

* Prepares and submits documents including monthly highlights, study reports and scientific manuscripts.

* Plans, directs, and evaluates both self-initiated and assigned research programs and interprets scientific data to identify and/or develop new product candidates or to improve existing therapeutic products.

Education Minimum Requirements:

* D.V.M. (or equivalent Veterinary Medicine advanced degree) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine with a license to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S. or Canada as applicable. Post-doctoral training in laboratory animal science or veterinary surgery preferred. Board certification or board eligibility (ACLAM or other veterinary specialty board) highly preferred

* Minimum B.S degree and an equivalent combination of training and laboratory animal surgical experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

* Communication Skills: Demonstrates advanced communication skills in conveying and receiving information. Demonstrates advanced oral and written communication skills commensurate with need to collaborate outside the Functional Group and department

* Data Analysis & Interpretation: Analyzes and interprets data in an objective, thoughtful and efficient manner; applies results to decision making and communicates analyses in terms that can be understood by stakeholders.

* Technical and Experimental Skills: Demonstrates strong surgical, anesthesia, and clinical skills with a variety of species, and the ability to troubleshoot surgical techniques to preserve the integrity of a study. Possesses an advanced ability to design, plan and perform robust and efficient experiments that lead to clear decisions.

* Knowledge of the Field: Demonstrates technical knowledge related to research in the laboratory. Effectively applies knowledge of scientific field to optimize decision making.

* Knowledge of Pharmaceutical Discovery Development & Lifecycle Management: Effectively applies knowledge of current technology trends to optimize drug discovery, development and lifecycle management processes across key functional areas.
