The Core Hematology and Clinical Immunology Supervisor reports directly to the Technical Director. Under the general direction of the Technical Director and Laboratory Directors, the incumbent's responsibilities will encompass all the daily operations of the Core Hematology Lab and the Clinical Immunology Lab, including supervision of laboratory staff.
All duties and responsibilities of Senior Technologists or Technical Specialist plus:
Regulatory/Compliance/Quality:
Manage QA activities and safety reporting system to ensure performance levels are met and corrections are made as necessary.
Assign and monitor work compliance with department SOP, applicable federal or state laws and accrediting agencies.
Ensure all proficiency testing is completed as required, results evaluated and all remedial actions are completed and documented.
Evaluates the laboratory's regulatory compliance and works with leadership to implement remediation. Prepares the laboratory for all regulatory reviews.
Responsible for ensuring all laboratory staff complete mandatory training.
Ensures compliance with all relevant safety and infection control policies (external agencies, hospital, department, lab). Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions.
Updates outside test requests concerning normal values, billing and other procedural changes. Performs compliance/billing corrections.
Writes, updates and implements new policy and procedures, as needed.
Human Resources:
Identifies individuals for hire to match laboratory staffing and technical need. Makes hiring decisions in consultation with Technical Director.
Ensures effective training, orientation and ongoing competency assessments.
Manages staffing, workflow and workload distributions to maintain service levels.
Prepares and conducts performance evaluation in compliance with department goals.
Identifies and investigates performance issues in conjunction with Technical Director and HR Business Partner. Implements corrective action in consultation with Technical Director.
Responds to employee questions and concerns, identifies possible solutions and escalates as needed.
Operations:
Acts as LIS resource for testing, troubleshooting, training and downtimes.
Manages the implementation of new tests, methods and technology according to department procedures.
Prepares data for budgets, quality/performance improvement projects.
Provides on site support during internal or external emergencies as requested by hospital or department leadership.
-Be fully competent with the methods of bench testing and provide technical counsel to staff. This is expected in Hematology and preferred in Immunology.
Oversees adequate stock of laboratory supplies.
Leadership:
Provides input to leadership on performance improvement or strategic initiatives.
Assists with development or analysis of lab budgets.
Responsible for meeting budget goals and commitments.
Assists with vendor and service contracts.
Conducts staff meetings.
Demonstrates the ability to perform and is responsible for performing all the duties of the senior technologist or technical specialist as needed.
Functions as Technical Director at times when Technical Director is not available.
Assists Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s) with special projects as required.
Attends departmental meetings and serves on committees as directed by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s).
Attends educational seminars and conferences to remain current with technological advancements and trends
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited college
ASCP certificaiton required
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Science
AND
Active national general certification or categorical certification specific to the specialty
AND
Minimum 6 years of progressively more responsible experience with a minimum 1 year in a supervisory role. Demonstrated knowledge specific to specialty.
OR
Minimum 3 years as Senior Medical Technologist or Technical Specialist in a relevant specialty at MGH
AND
Active national general certification or categorical certification in a relevant specialty
AND
Total of 2 consecutive years performance that meet expectations
AND
Meets continuing education requirements according to lab specific policies
Direct reports: 10-15 staff
