Job Summary:
Markel Surety is HIRING! Primary responsibilities include underwriting contract bonds adhering to Markel Suretys underwriting philosophy, appropriately assessing the risk presented and properly managing that risk. The Contract Surety Underwriter will deploy every form of marketing to strategically build a profitable book in a designated territory. The underwriter is to have the knowledge and apply the skills required of this position, including knowledge of required and normal ratios, risks associated with various types of construction activities, competitions underwriting attitudes and industry norms for all issues. The underwriter is the source for knowledge and information concerning bonding.
* Become an expert in the Markel Surety Underwriting Guide and all subsequent updates
* Review all new submissions / bond requests and initiate response
* Make reference calls and document files
* Communicate with agents regarding file needs
* Enter financial information into system, analyze, review system analysis
* Evaluate risk and determine underwriting criteria
* Determine the necessary forms for a case (bond forms, riders, statutory, etc.)
* Determine rate and other significant issues affecting bond issuance
* Review contract documents, identify onerous clauses and address each
* Fully document underwriting files
* Responsible for content of each bond and credit file
* Communicate clear, complete instructions to UA for bond issuance & invoicing
* Have knowledge of all duties of underwriting assistants
* Strategically facilitate and maintain agency relationships to produce profitable new business.
* Develop knowledge of agency personnel and any company/agent relationships
* Be involved in local activities and associations on a regular basis
* Assist with collections when necessary, especially at quarter and year end
Qualifications Required:
* 3+ years of surety underwriting required; bachelor's degree preferred
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
* Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and Outlook and overall computer system comfort and fluency
* Ability to develop relationships with internal and external customers
* High attention to detail
Please note: Markel has a phased approach for re-entry into our buildings that is designed to balance the ongoing health, safety, and well-being of our employees with operational considerations and regulatory/ governmental requirements and recommendations. Effective 6/1/21 we will implement a return to work strategy that allows for three days in the office every other week. We will update with further developments.
