Walgreens Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is a postgraduate training opportunity for pharmacists to enhance their skill set in the community and specialty pharmacy setting. The residency program is based out of a community specialty and retail site in Louisville, KY. The pharmacy teams service patients with many disease states including oncology, transplant, chronic inflammatory diseases, HIV and HCV. The community pharmacists at these sites work closely with providers, patients, and the community to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. In addition, residents gain insights on management issues that can affect the implementation of patient care services in the community and specialty pharmacy setting.
The program is academically affiliated and financially supported, in part, by the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy. The pharmacist will complete a teaching certificate program and will assist in teaching opportunities and precepting experiences for the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy. The residency program graduates will be leaders in the pharmacy community and will have an active role in advancing community pharmacy practice. A graduate from this residency program would be viewed to possess equivalent experience and skills to seek a pharmacy manager position within a specialty pharmacy location or a traditional community pharmacy practice site.
The resident will participate in the provision of patient care services through the following:
-Develop skills needed in Walgreens health system pharmacy relationships and specialty pharmacy
-Work with disease states such as oncology, transplant, chronic inflammatory disease, HCV and HIV
-Educate providers and payers on local specialty services
-Development of collaborative programs to improve patient adherence and outcomes
-Perform medication therapy management
-Assist in delivery of complex HIV/AIDS medication education
-Provide personalized, comprehensive care to patients with complex conditions
-Evaluate the sustainability of new patient care programs
-Enhance existing patient care programs
-Administer immunizations
-Complete a Teaching Certificate Program
-Serve as preceptor and instructor to pharmacy students
-Design, conduct, and present a practice based residency project at a professional conference
-Perform patient centered dispensing
-Provide clinical instruction to student pharmacists at the college of pharmacy and practice site
-Participate in community service events
