The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

This entry level to intermediate position is responsible for the design and front-line project execution of small distribution work orders in the St. Pete area. Work orders must meet the requirements of all applicable design, safety, and distribution construction standards. This position focuses on smaller, primarily residential work orders serving new customers. Duties also can include commercial new services, reliability improvements, streetlighting, and other small system required work as needed. Apply and develop engineering skills to distribution work. Assist in more complicated analysis and problem solving in the support of area operations as opportunity and experience dictate. The selected candidate will be the single point of contact for completing individual line extensions, residential and small commercial services, apartments, single overhead-to-underground customer service conversions, resolving property encroachment and clearance violation conflicts and individual customer complaints. Determine placement and extension of electrical service facilities, adhering to municipal and governing service standards and codes, completing construction prerequisites, calculating and invoicing customer contributions-in-aid-of-construction, coordinating jobs for construction, and adhering to distribution construction specifications/practices. Duties include developing construction prints, work instructions and assisting in preparation and issuance of design packages with low-medium levels of complexity. Additional duties include managing customer interfaces, maintaining the customer relationship to ensure customer satisfaction. Responsible for project execution from inception to completionfrom initial customer contact to electric meter set. This will include site investigation, future facilities location, construction obstacles, and staking of future distribution facilities for construction resources. Consult extensively with field operations to fully understand the operational nature of the system and the construction requirements. Support damage assessment and restoration during major and minor storms.

* Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
* Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
* Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
* Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
* Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
* Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Basic/Required Qualifications for an Engineer I:

* Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
* Valid Driver's License

Basic/Required Qualifications for an Engineer II:

* Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

* Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.

* Valid Driver's License

Additional Preferred Qualifications

* Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
* Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
* Good written and oral communication skills.
* Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
* Understanding of basic principles of project management.
* Experience in the utility industry.
* Experience with an electric utilities' distribution system.
* Experience with BOUD software.
* Experience with Maximo software.
