The Hardware Research and Technology Laboratory (HRTL) at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) is a group of multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers who enjoy the opportunity to invent and develop new technologies, foster innovation, and launch new businesses. Research in HRTL includes 3D printing, sensor systems for the IoT, carbon capture technology, applications of artificial intelligence, digital x-ray detection, life science instrumentation, robotics and much more. We enjoy the opportunity to publish externally and engage in strategic research with a variety of partners ranging from government agencies, start-ups to the Fortune 50.

The Photonic Systems group within HRTL is looking for a Research Scientist in optical systems with applications in diverse fields such as structural health monitoring, flow cytometry, micro-fluidic systems, and detection in harsh environments. Technical areas of current projects include the following:

* (Fiber) optical sensors for physical, biological, and chemical properties
* Design, prototyping and testing of optical systems, including integrated photonic circuits, free space, and fiber optics
* Optical detection techniques and technologies (e.g. fluorescence, scattering, absorption, lifetime, spectral etc.)
* Photonic materials and structures
* Hands-on experience with various light sources and detectors
* Simulation, data acquisition and data evaluation
* Instrumentation for structural health monitoring

Responsibilities:

* Design, prototype, and test complex optical systems
* Perform sophisticated optical sensing experiments and data analysis thereof
* Collaborate with PARC researchers and contribute to projects as a subject matter expert
* Incubate new ideas and collaborate with PARC staff to develop applications for existing technology
* Survey government sponsorship opportunities
* Engage with external partners and funding sources and write proposals for internal and external sponsors
* Continue to learn and stay informed of developments in the field of research

Requirements:

* Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field
* Direct experience in one or more of the technical areas listed above
* Hands-on lab experience
* Experience with complex data analysis and lab automation in MATLAB/Python/LabView/C++
* Strong record of research and innovative problem solving
