General Description
The primary responsibility of the Progeny Test Coordinator role involves coordinating the establishment and management of all genetic field tests in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. This role reports to the Southern Tree Improvement Platform Manager. The position will be located at the Oliver Tree Improvement Center near Sylvania, GA.
This position may work with key scientists and project leaders across all S&T disciplines. Strong communication and coordination are required with scientists and the entire team to ensure field test sites are properly selected, site prepared, established, maintained, measured, and documented. The Progeny Test Coordinator will be able to conduct research on various aspects of silviculture, tree genetics, tree physiology, plant pathology and plant health. The individual in the role will have a strong understanding of tree improvement, southern pine silviculture and possess the ability to recognize opportunities for research and operational improvement.
The position will be responsible for transferring technological information in a clear and concise manner to managers, early- and mid-rotation foresters, and other relevant parties. This transfer of information may be in the form of group presentations, field tours, and written reports. In addition to formal research activities, the coordinator is expected to stay abreast of current science, to understand operational practices, and to recognize research needs and challenges as they arise.
Location:Oliver Tree Improvement Center is in Screven County, GA approximately 20-25 minutes from Statesboro, GA, and approximately 45-60 minutes from the greater Savannah, GA area.
Essential Job Functions
* Responsible for coordinating the establishment and management of all genetic field tests in assigned region primarily, but also across multiple disciplines within the S&T organization, other regions as necessary, and the business.
* Plan and execute field work including site selection, study installation, maintenance, measurements, data audits and treatment application according to workplans.
* Contract administration for different research projects. Coordinate work with collaborators across S&T disciplines.
* Conduct research on various aspects of silviculture, tree genetics, tree physiology, plant pathology and plant health related to genetics as needed.
* Manage cooperative membership progeny testing obligations.
* Coordinate research activities with other members of S&T as well as area foresters.
* Help scientists with transfer of information and technology and help troubleshoot technology implementation.
* Data analysis, summarization, and tech reports covering various aspects of progeny test and research results.
* Assist in preparation to field tours.
* Ensure all work is completed in a safe manner following all regulations and JSAs.
* Assist other platforms and projects in the Atlantic, Piedmont, and NC/VA Regions with research activities as needed.
Qualifications
* Masters degree in tree improvement, forestry, or a closely related field OR Bachelors degree in tree improvement, forestry, or a closely related field, with more than 3 years of practical experience
* Must possess at least 1 of the following:
* Good understanding of genetics and tree improvement, experimental design, and the importance of data quality
* Basic understanding of a broad range of core competencies including plantation nutrition, tree physiology, soils, growth and yield, and silvicultural systems
* Field forestry experience
* Herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer application management
* Contract administration (both preparing contracts and managing the contractor)
* Excellent computer skills including a working knowledge of MS Office and GIS applications
* Proficient in the use of statistical tools and software such as SAS or R a plus
* Strong math, analytical and financial analysis skills including but not limited to interpreting research data and genetic analyses
* Good communication and organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively across technical disciplines and work well in team situations
* Demonstrated ability to work safely in forestry or related operations
* Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
* The ability to work alone safely, often in remote areas, prepared to do field intensive work
* Proactive problem-solving skills
* Ability to travel up to 40% of the time, sometimes 1-2 weeks at a time often requiring irregular work hours
* Ability to operate truck and trailer combination up to 26,000 lbs and pass DOT medical requirements. Ability to operate tractors and mowers is a plus
