Job Summary:

The individual we seek will lead the newly crafted Commercial Wholesale and Retail War & Terrorism Product Line for Markel in the US. The leader will work with the Markel International team, headquartered in London, to set the overall US strategy to produce a profitable underwriting portfolio.

* Maintain specific underwriting policies and procedures and collaborate with management, claims, actuarial and product development to institute changes when appropriate.
* Prepare, coordinate and execute product line specific training for underwriters and support staff.
* Set pricing policies and standards within the product line and review and approve large submissions beyond assigned authority levels.
* Proactively identify new market opportunities and product offerings as well as support cross-sell opportunities by identifying client needs within the War & Terrorism Product Line and passing those opportunities to other underwriting units.
* Hire, train, mentor, develop, and lead US War & Terrorism underwriters as assigned.
* Act as advocate for Markel and the War & Terrorism product line and communicate regularly with underwriters with authority.
* Promote collaboration with US underwriting teams to advance line of business profit and growth goals

Education/Experience

* 10+ years of current wholesale and retail war and terrorism underwriting expertise required;
* Minimum of 5+ years of shown success hiring, training, team building, mentoring and performance management of a commercial insurance underwriting team required;
* Proven expertise in delivering outstanding underwriting results required;
* Broad understanding of US claims, actuarial, product development, regulatory and compliance functions;
* Understand and enjoy working in a highly matrixed environment;
* High energy, ability to deliver exceptional written and verbal presentations, pro-active self-starter; strong sense of urgency, flexible and spontaneous;
* Proven track record in setting and meeting objectives and impact and influencing peers and subordinates to consensus ;
* 50% domestic and international travel when appropriate.
