Purpose:
Responsible for all areas of design, research & development engineering. Includes R&D studies, mathematical modeling, design, evaluation, analyses, programming, testing and field trials evaluation.
Responsible for the research / applied research / advanced development in a competency area to support the explore, incubate, and partner research activities that enable leadership products and services.

Responsible for the development and growth of a strategic competency. This includes identification of required skills, the research agenda, and competitive awareness in a given competency area.

Scope:
Specific:
Provides consultative direction to build and grow the research competency area towards goals & objectives.

Manages a team which may include; Research Fellows, Principal Scientists, Researchers, Technologists, Engineers, Technicians and Administrative personnel.

General:
Adapts and executes functional or departmental business plans and contributes to the development of organizational strategies

Anticipates internal and/or external business challenges/ regulatory issues

Decisions are guided by functional strategies and priorities

May include international accountability; and may include some global accountability

Primary Responsibilities:
Manages all resources & deliverables for area managed.

Serves as a source of technical/ functional expertise and perspective to others in and outside the team.

Demonstrates the application of a broad technical/industry knowledge approach to achieve business objectives.

Provides personnel management, coaching, counseling and mentorship to members of the team. Provides team with opportunities for technical & professional growth.

Applies innovative solutions, methods, and processes that improve the research areas performance.

Understands complex technical and business information and communicates effectively to area managed.

Contributes to /co-develops Lab and Program level annual objectives and tracks progress in concert with the program managers.

May participate in external professional community
