Description
Develop and implement projects for ensuring the locomotives that serve Union Pacific customers are as safe, productive, efficient and reliable as possible. This role researches, develops, establishes and implements locomotive plans, standards, technology and programs. This employee coordinates the delivery of new locomotives and technology with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), and directs and implements locomotive modifications. This job provides recommendations for meeting regulatory requirements for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and regulatory agencies. The purpose of this position is to help improve locomotive availability, reliability and performance for Union Pacific and the customers the railroad serves.
Accountabilities
Plan, direct and coordinate the locomotive maintenance planning, standards, programs and technology for Union Pacific's locomotive fleet
Serve as the primary liaison between other departments, including the Supply and Transportation departments, to develop and implement major locomotive technology, and oversee major locomotive research and development efforts
Provide design, data analysis, research and testing for locomotives and components in an effort to improve life cycle cost
Develop and implement modification programs and changes in maintenance practices to reduce failure and improve locomotive performance
Assist the system repair shops to ensure all locomotives meet requirements for the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and other regulatory agencies, and assist other Union Pacific departments, including the Law Department, to interpret and implement locomotive regulations
Apply subject matter expertise to resolve the root cause of impactful train incidents with a focus on electrical subsystems
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Participation in the Operations Management Training or Field Management Training (OMT/FMT) program or 3 or more years of work experience
Preferred
A Bachelor of Science degree in in technical Engineering field (ie. Mechanical, Electrical or Technology)
5 years experience in Operating Practices (in any capacity)
5 years experience in railroad operations, specifically in Locomotive Engineering (as a manager)
5 years experience in Engineering with a focus on Fundamental Engineering Principles (in any capacity)
2 years experience in the Operating Department with a focus on Locomotive Maintenance and Reliability (as a manager)
2 years experience in the transportation industry, specifically Transportation Management Practices (in any capacity)
