Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: As part of the Communications Team, the Senior Manager, External Communications reports to and supports the Director, External Communications, who oversees all short and long-term communications strategies designed to build the Companys external reputation. This position is responsible for media relations strategy and execution, external company messaging related to key business priorities, and oversight of partner agency work. The Sr. Manager will work closely with internal clients and executives to identify newshooks and develop messaging and tactics that advance the brand, as well as serve as a spokesperson with media and bloggers. This person will develop and execute proactive sustainability communications strategies, and will be expected to understand media trends and how the Company can leverage external issues to strengthen its brand and reputation.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Develops media relations strategies and campaigns designed to enhance company visibility in key business areas, including but not limited to sustainability and recycling.
* Directs external agency partner to support media relations goals, including oversight of all planning, media training, execution and KPI reporting.
* Develops short-and long-term external company messaging, and is responsible for accuracy, timeliness and relevancy. Obtains company leadership buy-in, conducts media training and serves as company spokesperson.
* Evaluates proactive and reactive, as well as earned and paid, media and publicity opportunities and provides thoughtful recommendations based on ROI and experience.
* Leads company sustainability report communications strategy and execution.
* Actively participates in cross-functional initiatives and builds strong partnerships with colleagues and company leaders.
* Maintains a master calendar of executive media engagements.
* This position may require travel by air, car and/or other modes of transportation up to 10% of the time.
* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

* Understanding of digital media and online influencers
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelors Degree in journalism, public relations or communications.
* Minimum of 10 years of experience in a corporate communications or public relations agency setting.
* Experience serving as a spokesperson with national media and preparing executives for media engagement.
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
* Experience ideating, developing and implementing through cross-functional collaboration to achieve goals.

The company’s collection services include curbside collection of waste for transport to transfer stations, landfills, or recycling processing centers; supply of waste containers; and renting of compactors.
It is also involved in the processing and sale of old corrugated containers, old newsprint, aluminum, glass, and other materials; temporary waste and recycling collection services; and provision of landfill services. As of December 31, 2018, the company operated through 349 collection operations, 207 transfer stations, 190 active landfills, 91 recycling processing centers, and 11 salt water disposal wells, as well as 7 treatment, recovery, and disposal facilities in 41 states and Puerto Rico.It also operated 75 landfill gas-to-energy and renewable energy projects and had 129 closed landfills. The company was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.
