Job Description

PPG Aerospace Transparencys Group produces and markets over 1400 different glass, plastic and composite transparency designs as well as a variety of components and related products in three different manufacturing facilities supporting Commercial, Military, General Aviation and Specialty Armored markets.

As the Materials Lab and Process Supervisor, you will be a part of the Materials, Process and Coating Technology Group in the PPG Aerospace Transparencies Engineering R&T Global that provides the design direction, technical specifications and direction for developing new products and materials!

Key Responsibilities:

* Accountable for the selection, testing and technical support of new and existing materials on Aerospace Transparencies products throughout the world for qualification or production support. Typical materials include glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, transparent coatings, urethane, vinyl, sealants, primers, adhesives and metals.
* Develop test plans with accurate controls, fabricate specimens, and perform physical testing that relates back to understanding of the root cause and assist in corrective action implementation.
* Responsible for technical communication within PPG, to customers and occasionally to governmental regulatory agencies for new and existing products.
* Remain technically aware of industry trends, government regulations, customer requirements and PPG Aerospace Transparencys manufacturing process requirements in order to personally contribute suggestions and recommendations and assist subordinates.
* Ensure the overall group is able to meet both customer needs and satisfaction while meeting plant profitability objectives safely and efficiently.
* Provide continuous improvements towards safety, production performance, yields, quality, and cost goals.
* Demonstrate team collaboration and participate in safety, quality and value improvement teams.
* Participate in the PPG Product Development Team (PDT) process during Technical Reviews and Management Gate Reviews (including New Program Selection Meeting).
* Act as a key contributor in the engineering review (ERB) and material review board (MRB) processes.

Qualifications:

* The position requires a minimum of an MS degree in a related engineering, chemistry, physics or material science field of study.
* 4 years in a leadership or supervisory role required..
* Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a lab environment required.
* Ability to interact with the employees, champion and facilitate interaction with production and within the group.
* Direct knowledge and experience with aerospace composites, coatings and processes is preferred. Knowledge of structure-property relationship for polymers will be another positive.
* Strong fundamental knowledge of material properties, physical testing methods, relationship to product performance are required.
* A strong material, process and material properties understanding is critical.
* A track record for new materials introduction into a commercial setting, patent and publication writing experience, project proposal writing and project experience is highly desirable
* Six sigma, Lean, PFMEA, DOE, scale-up and production experience are a plus. Knowledge related to glass manufacturing and tempering will be advantageous.
