The Facebook Connectivity team builds the bleeding edge technology that will allow Facebook to connect our next billion users. Through the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), Facebook has partnered with over 500 global technology and telecom leaders to design, build, and deploy new telecom technologies. Our projects are aimed at delivering connectivity to people without access to the internet and increasing connectivity for people with access to existing, but inadequate network infrastructures. The Connectivity Deployment team works closely with cross-functional partners to support engineering, testing, and deployments across the globe. This role is responsible for designing and implementing connectivity solutions in partnership with OEMs and network operators. Successful candidate will provide network engineering support for labs and testbeds and will grow to support FBC and TIP initiatives as appropriate for skill set and interests.
Network Engineer, Connectivity Deployment Responsibilities
* Comprehensive wireless and TCP/IP network design and implementation
* Work cross functionally with partners, project management, network, software, and hardware engineers to validate network designs to solve connectivity problems
* Develop requirements and implementation plans with business partners and executive teams
* Build and integrate connectivity solutions with operator/ISP networks
* Deploy and operate testbeds to test wireless connectivity solutions
* Proactively contribute to and maintain technical and training documentation
* Develop automation and tooling as needed to support connectivity deployment initiatives
* Ability to travel internationally, up to 25% of the time (Post COVID). Comfort working across time zones, teams and cultures required
Minimum Qualifications
* 4+ years of work experience responsible for designing, deploying and operating networks such as WISP, cellular carrier, or telco level
* Working knowledge of network protocols (TCP/UDP, DHCP, DNS) and experience with IPv4 and IPv6
* Experience working in a multi-vendor environment with hands-on experience with networking hardware
* Expertise in technical evaluation/validation of various network elements
* Working knowledge of network management protocols (SNMP, syslog, Net Flow) and security protocols (SSH, HTTPS/SSL, AAA, IPsec)
* Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, Visio, Lucidchart or other diagram and presentation tools
* Experience in network performance and optimization design
* Analytical, problem-solving, and cross-functional management skills with a clear focus under pressure
* Experience with carrier backhaul including satellite, microwave, and fiber transport networks
* Familiarity with Linux based systems and experience with scripting and automation (Bash, Python, Perl)
* Experience with Linux OS/networking
* Communications skills
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience in at least one programming language like Python, Perl, C/C++, or Go for developing automation software or tooling
* Automation software (Ansible, Chef, etc.) experience and familiarity
* Start-up or technical infrastructure experience
* Network and data visualization experience
* Experience with OpenFlow, OpenVSwitch, OpenWRT
* Experience configuring and troubleshooting routing and switching protocols (BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, RSVP-TE, VRRP)
* Experience with cloud-based controllers, orchestrators, carrier Wi-Fi offload, LTE-U and Private LTE
* Experience with network deployments in emerging markets
* Experience with network traffic generators (e.g., IXIA, Spirent, Xena, TM500, UE100), traffic impairment boxes, KPI measurement tools, spectrum analyzers, protocol analyzers (e.g., wireshark)
* Working knowledge of 3GPP specifications, specifically 3G UMTS, 4G LTE
* Experience working with governments, municipalities, and installation crews for deployment of either wired or wireless networks
