Western Plains Medical Complex
Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services or their designee, the Surgical Scrub Tech assists in the care of the surgical patient by: scrubbing and setting up of surgical procedures; passing instruments to the surgeon and their assistant; aids in positioning, transferring of patient.
Provides direct patient care to young children through geriatric patient populations in the perioperative setting.
Interacts professionally with physicians, patients/family and others in a friendly, professional matter.
Prepares operating room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual physician by using their procedure cards.
Demonstrates competence in the care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
Able to scrub all types of procedures.
Able to operate all sterilizers within the department (Steris, Sterad, Steam sterilizer).
Follows universal protocols (counts) and knows proper procedure if counts are incorrect.
Informs nurse manager or director regarding any anticipated and/or actual issues/problems.
Aids in the cleaning of instruments and OR rooms.
Demonstrates proper use of operating room equipment and notifies proper departments when equipment not functioning properly.
Follows procedures for steam sterilization, Sterad, and Steris I utilizing sterilization logs.
Is responsible for stocking and ordering supplies for the OR rooms.
Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of OR suites before and between cases and after terminal case.
Is able to open sterile supplies and set up for procedures.
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all surgical equipment.
Is consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases.
Consistently anticipates needs of patient and surgical team before and through out the surgical procedure.
Consistently assists with updating Physician preference cards with Changes. Communicates pertinent changes to Charge nurse, materials coordinator and other staff, as necessary.
Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors
Job Requirements
Minimum Education
High Diploma or GED required.
Associates degree and graduate from a Surgical Scrub Tech program preferred.
Required Skills
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire.
Surgical Tech Certification preferred.
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
