Scope of Position:
* The candidate will work both independently and with team members to apply material science engineering fundamental principles to provide batch expertise to plants and projects. The candidate will lead efforts to qualify new raw materials, manage raw materials suppliers and develop batching and process control systems; they will deal with interactions of raw materials on products and process across divisions. The candidate will solve some of Cornings most challenging technical problems by understanding all aspects of the interactions of batch production, including raw materials, batch mixing and glass technology. Team members typically support projects ranging from research through stage 5 manufacturing and the ideal candidate would be adept at fluently working across that full spectrum. The Materials Engineering laboratory at Decker serves as the base of operations and this candidate would play a major role in growing capabilities with new tools/techniques/thinking to help solve new problems. This corporate engineering role serves all existing businesses with an expectation for rapid solution development and strong technical competence.
Day to Day Responsibilities include managing team to:
* Understand material properties and their impact on Cornings products and processes
* Identify and qualify raw materials to improve yield, reduce costs, improve product attributes and enable new products
* Assist in managing raw material suppliers
* Develop process simulations to extend knowledge base and prove/disprove hypotheses
* Work with department laboratory staff to ensure optimal turnaround and experimental efficiency
* Protect Cornings intellectual property
* Document all results
* Maintain high quality engineering principles, including extensive use of statistics, structured problem-solving methods such as KT, DoE, and DMAIC, DMAIC six sigma tools
* Measure and communicate performance against objectives
Travel Requirements:
* Up to 25%, some international
Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:
* Flextime; typical 8:00 5:00; Monday Friday. Some projects may require additional hours.
Education & Experience:
* Technical Degree Required (glass, ceramics, materials science or related fields), BS minimum, MS preferred
