The Team

We are the Gray Systems Lab (GSL), the applied research group for Microsoft Azure Data. We tackle research problems in the areas of databases, big data, cloud, systems-for-ML, and ML-for-systems. Our mission is to advance the Microsoft Azure Data organization, and we do so in three ways: (i) innovating within Microsoft products and services (ii) publishing in top-tier conferences and journals, and (iii) actively contributing to open-source projects. The team spans multiple geographical locations (Redmond WA, Sunnyvale CA, Madison WI, Atlanta GA) with a mix of researchers, engineers, and data scientists. With team members originating from 10 countries and 4 continents, each of us brings something authentically unique to the team. Your Role

As a Scientist, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting edge technology to build next-generation cloud data platforms. You will collaborate closely with product and research engineers to push the boundaries of our technology stack. Your opportunity as a GSL scientist goes beyond performing innovative research. By leveraging your position in an applied research group, you can have a real-world impact on Microsoft products and broadly in industry and open-source software. This involves quickly picking up complex systems, identifying opportunities, proposing innovative designs, and implementing them in our systems. To build production-quality solutions, you will engage deeply with product teams, but long-term product ownership and ops are not part of GSL charter. A key role for a scientist, especially as you advance in your career, is to become increasingly independent in identifying good technical challenges - you will do so by interacting with engineering teams across Azure Data and Microsoft in general. As a scientist, you are also expected to become proficient with relevant academic literature and drive dissemination of the innovative work in GSL through publications and talks.

In alignment with Microsoft's direction, in most cases we expect the candidate to relocate to one of the lab locations, but we are open to considering remote work for the right candidate.

RESPONSIBILIITIES:u202F

* Design, build, and operationalizeu202Fdata systems.
* Navigate and improve complex software systems, participate in design decisions, and implement new features.
* Work closely with internal product teams to understand and address their requirements.
* Collaborate with GSL members and PMs and engineers from product groups.
* Contribute to open-source systems.
* Participate in academic activities through publications, presentations, and community services.

Basic REQUIREMENTS:u202F

* PhD degreeu202Fin computer science or related STEM field.
* u202F4+ years with one or more of the following languages: C, Java, Python, C++, Rust.
* Proven publication track record.

Preferred REQUIREMENTS:

* 2+ years of industry engineering experience is preferred.
* Good written and verbal communication, including presentation skills.
* Experience building, evaluating or operating online services and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
* Experience using or contributing to SQL systems, such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or others.
* Experience using or contributing to big data systems such as Hadoop, Spark, or others.
* Experience using or building data science tooling and libraries such sklearn, pandas, numpy, pytorch, tensorflow
