Job Summary:
The UNIX/VMWare Systems Engineer will be responsible for: Implementing, supporting, and overseeing physical and virtual environment, both on-prem and in the cloud. Works in conjunction with architecture team, Cloud Center of Excellence and Site Reliability Team (SRE) designing, implementing, and improving solutions for existing and future state. Works with Managed Services to oversee and provide technical assistance for current and future projects as well as troubleshooting technical issues with engineered systems.

Essential Job Functions:
Oversees the health, capacity, patch level and overall status of systems.
Provides technical recommendations to the architecture team to provide solutions to meet business problems
Assists architecture with build standards
Perform or oversee data backup operations, and the maintenance of backup systems
Assists with planning, oversight, and implementation of successful DR strategy to include regular DR testing
Applies patches and upgrades for systems and images
Develops and follows change management documentation with the inclusion of system verification and back out plans.
Prepares and implements and/or oversees, regularly planned infrastructure refreshes
Works with Cloud and Site Reliability teams (SRE) creating playbooks so that creation of VMs is automated
Assists with vendor management and governance for systems that are not maintained in house.
Assists in establishing performance metrics and measurement and reporting of established metrics
Provides level 2 and level 3 support.
Assists Incident Management with troubleshooting of issues and with Problem Management on root cause analysis after
Builds servers or oversees vendor implementation of engineered systems including hardening and high availability
Documents and recommends policies, procedures, and systems architecture for engineered systems
Assists monitoring and SRE teams with the implementation of tools on systems (UNIX, VMware, Storage, Backup, Cloud)
Works with Site Reliability team to automate incident creation, response, and self-healing scripts
Provide recommended actions to adhere to best management practices with existing infrastructure
Deploy new infrastructure adhering to best recommended practices and hardening policies
Generate operations reports related to system capacity and utilization
Regularly review system logs for issue prevention and provide timely resolution to discovered issues
Be available for an on-call rotational schedule with other team members.
Maintain governance over vendors providing IaaS and PaaS for Farmers both on-prem and off
Execute or oversee, performance enhancements to existing systems and infrastructure
Regularly review system logs for issue prevention and provide timely resolution to discovered issues
Schedule, perform or oversee, regular systems maintenance, including host, VM, and application updates

Education Requirements:
BS/BA Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and relevant professional certifications.
Technical Certifications, VMware, cloud, UNIX, Storage and Backup are a plus. RHSA or AIX certification preferred

Experience Requirements:
5+ yrs Linux/AIX/SUN system administration experience (Red Hat, SUSE, AIX, SUN, Debian)
5+ yrs experience deploying and supporting IaaS on-prem and/or cloud
5+ yrs experience with backup software and methodologies and DR implementation
5+ yrs experience scripting (bash, shell, python, powershell, or perl)
5+ yrs experience working in virtual environments including VMware ESX and/or AIX Logical Partitioning
5+ yrs experience supporting storage configs for NAS and SAN, EMC VMAX, Isilon, ECS, DataDomain and xTremIO preferred
Experience with Virtual backup technologies, software, hardware and replication implementation
Networking familiarity (OSI, IP addressing, routing protocols, VLAN)
Experience with Network troubleshooting using Wireshark or similar tools
Experience with Ansible Automation or Configuration Management a plus
Experience supporting IaaS in AWS or Azure a plus
AWS Workspaces or Citrix experience a plus
Demonstrated troubleshooting abilities, ability to quickly review logs, decipher scripts etc.
Experience using monitoring software such as Splunk, AppDynamics, SolarWinds, etc. a plus
