Job Description
This supervisor/resident manager will lead a group of technical employees with similar functional responsibilities for engineering deliverables in support of R&D projects and programs. You'll provide technical leadership in guiding the team to the successful execution of R&D build and testing. You must have broad technical knowledge, training and understanding combined with creative and independent thinking and conceptual ability to relate work performed within the team. Developing new technologies, processes, standards, or operational plans in support of the organization's business strategies will have a direct impact on business and/or function overall results. You're an influencer of others within the organization to accept new concepts, practices, and approaches. Additional items of note may include identifying problems, updating or modifying working methods that may be complex in their work area without the benefit of defined procedures. Promoting GM's values and making customer-focused decisions will be at the heart of the role. You will also identify, capture and protect GM intellectual property, while championing R&D technical and business imperatives across operational sites. Responsibilities also include staffing, communicating, training and development, directing and prioritization of work, evaluating performance and removing roadblocks. Some more to look forward to:
* Responsibilities: Lead, guide and advise a team responsible for engineering deliverables in support of the R&D's business objectives. Provide technical leadership to work teams across multiple locations. Cross-functional interaction and collaboration. Assist with test and build definitions. Translates business, program and project objectives into meaningful deliverables for the work group. Support leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals, e.g. safety, budget, purchasing, etc. Champion R&D technical and business interests to positively influence policies and procedures across operational sites.
* Intellectual Property: Identify, document and protect IP created during the course of business.
* Hiring: Identify and recruit highly skilled individuals to support R&D initiatives and expand teams capabilities.
* Communicating: Conduct regularly scheduled Team Meetings, Communicates GM Policies & Procedures, Leadership and Safety Messages. Connect with partners throughout all levels of the organization. May include preparing and giving presentations.
* Training & Developing: Insure employees complete all mandatory GM training and any specific training related to functional responsibility. Understand & support employee's career development goals. Develop and executes initiatives to improve work team capability and increase work team capacity.
* Assigning Work: Assign and manage workload of direct reports. Sets individual employee and group priorities. Work with LGMs, EGMs and Directors to determine project priorities.
* Monitoring & Approving GM Records: Review and approve employee work and overtime schedules, expenses, and other work-related data.
* Evaluating Performance and Behaviors: Review deliverables and behavior, providing candid and constructive feedback to employees. Conduct performance interventions whenever needed.
* Recognition: Formally & informally recognize employees contributions. Provides timely and consistent feedback to direct employees as appropriate. Participates in compensation planning and coordinates compensation treatment.
* Removing Roadblocks & Resolving Issues: Observe and step up to remove roadblocks and resolve potential issues.
* Supply Chain: Forecasting material needs based upon project portfolio. Maintain stock of frequently used consumable and reusable items. Manage preventive maintenance of equipment and project future needs.
Additional Job Description
What You Need
* B.S. Engineering or equivalent working experience
* 10+ years of related experience
* Broad technical skills and demonstrated abilities in research and/or engineering area of responsibility.
* Thorough understanding of engineering theory and principles. Provide technical alternatives to balance imperatives.
* Strong skills with navigating administrative and engineering systems and tools
* Ability to communicate, empower and inspire direct reports and others.
* Ability to champion and lead change within team and with others related to the team
* Competent with conflict management and problem solving in the fast changing test environment
* Strong sociability while working effectively cross-functionally and cross-culturally to grow relationships and partnerships
* Ability to hold employees and related groups accountable for deliverables.
* Demonstrates innovative and critical thinking and initiative to take action in support of positive change
* Demonstrated analytical ability to problem solve in an environment where problems are unusual and difficult
* Demonstrates honesty, integrity and trust. Leads by example.
* Demonstrated experience in Project Management
* Ability to travel (domestic and international) periodically for training and on-site technology transfer
* DFSS Green Belt Certified
Additionally, you should have experience in at least one of the following areas -
* Battery Electric Vehicle Systems (Electric Motors, Power Electronics HV Batteries)
* High Voltage Safety
* Instrumentation & Test Automation Fabrication
* ICE After-treatment & Emissions Measurement Systems
What Would Be Even Better
* M.S. in Engineering or other technical focus
* DFSS Black Belt Certified
* Broad knowledge and operational understanding of GM Policies and Procedures, e.g. Safety, Workplace Organization (GMS WPO), Environmental, Chemical Management, etc.
* GM administrative and engineering systems and tools (i.e. eSAP, PTAS, CSTS, etc.)
AND
Extensive experience in several of the following areas:
* Battery Electric Vehicle Systems (Electric Motors, Power Electronics, HV Batteries)
* High Voltage Safety
* Instrumentation & Test Automation Fabrication
* ICE After-treatment & Emissions Measurement Systems
