Work Hours/Shift:

Full Time/Days

You will be responsible for:

* Prescribed medication via inhalation in accordance with the physicians order
* Oxygen therapy in accordance with departmental oxygen protocol
* Demonstrates competency and performs airway care on infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients:
* Performs naso-tracheal / endotracheal suctioning
* Performs naso-tracheal / endotracheal intubation
* Performs extubation procedures
* Performs tracheostomy tube changes
* Ensures that endotracheal tubes are rotated and retaped every 24 hours
* Demonstrates competency in the critical care area:
* Rotates to critical care area routinely to ensure proficiency in ventilator management
* Performs patient assessment every shift
* Performs weaning parameters on request and per protocol
* Assesses patient post extubation to ensure absence of stridor and or laryngeal spasm
* Assess cuff pressure and endotracheal tube placement and documents
* Makes changes in ventilation settings per protocol
* Makes emergency decisions on ventilation settings in the absence of a physicians order
* May be required to perform arterial line insertion, if certified to do so
* May be required to perform intubation, if certified to do so
* Performs diagnostic procedures to assist in diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and research:
* Measurement of ventilator volumes, pressures and flows
* Induction and collection of sputum specimen
* May perform pulmonary function testing
* Performs and assures accuracy of arterial blood gas puncture and analysis
* May be required to assist physician in cardiac stress testing per hospital policy
* Performs setup of Holter monitors, may also scan Holter monitor data
* Assist with bedside bronchoscopy per hospital policy
* May perform electroencephalograms per hospital policy
* Performs electrocardiograms
* Performs quality control and maintenance of the blood gas analyzer:
* Enters results into the computer
* Controls that are out of control are documented appropriately in the computer
* Ensures that daily maintenance is performed and is in compliance
* Ensures that blood gas results that exceed panic values are immediately communicated to the physician or nurse and entered in the panic value section of the computer
* If Lead RT, ensures that the Quality Controls are analyzed on time, and that the laboratories are in control.
* Performs as a team member actively collaborating with other departments and provides specific respiratory expertise for all age groups
* Participates in the Code Blue
* Evaluates therapies and procedures performed for appropriateness, recommends and orders changes.
* Provides backup assistance and training to other professionals as needed
* Required to be NRP certified and competent to work in the Birth Care Center
* Provides clinical coverage at FL Hospital Oceanside if intubation certified
* Administers all invasive modes of therapy for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and non-invasive modes of therapy for infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients:
* Modifies assessment and interview techniques, identifying the psychosocial, physical and educational needs of the patient
* Provides education and teaching specific to age group
* Documents teaching performed in the Interdisciplinary Patient/Family Education Record
* Provides clerical assistance as required by department policy:
* Approved to take verbal / telephone orders related to cardiopulmonary specialties
* Performs billing of procedures performed and equipment used
* May be required to transcribe physician dictation per hospital policy
* Records, processes and files patient reports / documentation
* Follows protocol for discontinuing therapy:
* Discards disposable supplies
* Sends non-disposable equipment to Central Sterilization for decontamination by the end of the shift
* Decontaminates ventilators after use, sets-up with new equipment and performs SST for next use
* Reports supply and equipment needs to the Cardiopulmonary Manager or lead Respiratory Therapist
* Performs all duties as assigned
* Accurately and neatly documents for procedures done. Documentation is thorough and complete, to ensure quality standards set by the department and the hospital
* Ensures proper use of universal precautions against contamination or cross contamination, and enforces safety regulations according to hospital policies on a continual basis
* Maintains departmental productivity standards
* Receives and gives report clearly to communicate patient care information to provide optimal care
* Keeps Lead Respiratory Therapist or Cardiopulmonary Manager informed and seeks assistance from appropriate individuals when confronted with unfamiliar procedure and techniques, before implementing them, to ensure deliverance of safe patient care
* Communicates and collaborates with multidisciplinary team to ensure high quality patient care
* Communicates appropriate education to patients and family members to optimize their care in the hospital. Documents education on the patient education form
* Manages time and equipment effectively and works as a team member to provide the best possible patient care

Qualifications
What you will need:

* Current BLS is required.
* ACLS must be obtained within 90 days of employment
* PALS and/or NRP must be obtained within 90 days of hire if required by incumbent's EFR primary hospital.
* Must have a valid Florida license
* Must have a minimum 3 years of hospital experience as RRT or > 8 years of experience as CRT and at least 1 year of critical care.
* Must be a graduate of an approved respiratory care program; Associates degree or equivalent is required.

Job Summary:

The Respiratory Therapist III provides routine, emergent and critical cardiopulmonary care under the direction of a physician to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Takes responsibility as Lead Therapist covering in a supervisory capacity in the absence of a Lead Therapist. Adheres to the Corporate Compliance Plan, to the rules and regulations of all local, state and federal agencies and to the standards of all accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
