As an Indirect tax analyst sr, you will be responsible for managing complex indirect tax responsibilities across functional areas and business channels and activities with minimal direction. Your responsibilities include ERP and tax systems project management, tax reporting, analysis, tax research, audits, planning, and cross-functional business and systems involvement for sales tax, value added tax (e.g. VAT, GST) and other indirect taxes in the US, Canada and other countries to ensure Starbucks compliance with tax laws and to minimize overall tax liabilities. The position contributes to error risk analysis and continuous improvements across functional areas of responsibility.

As an indirect ta analyst sr, you will:

Tax Calculations and Analysis - Prepares complex tax calculations, work papers, journal entries and reconciliations required for accurate tax reporting for areas of responsibility. Performs trend, variance and risk analysis and communicates issues or changes. Effectively utilizes internal systems and reporting tools for recurring and ad-hoc reporting and analysis to support business and tax requirements and decisions.
Tax Expertise/Policy - Monitors changes in laws and rates and stays technically current to support tax requirements for areas of responsibility. Performs tax law research and clearly communicates verbally and in writing recommended business application, impacts or changes to Starbucks tax policies or practices.
Tax Returns - May prepare or review tax returns, payments, and tax authority notices, or provide required information to external service providers. Works with tax jurisdictions and/or service providers to resolve issues and improve the processes.
Tax Audits - Assists with and may conduct tax audits and tax refund/credit reviews. Assists with the analysis of audit methods and sampling techniques, prepares documentation required, assists with evaluating possible or proposed adjustments, and identifies and recommends actions to resolve issues.
Business Systems Tax Requirements - Determines, maintains, or reviews tax requirements, tax classifications, exemptions, rules, rates and tax updates for retail, business, finance, or tax systems and ensures usability of systems and data for tax purposes for areas of responsibility. Identifies opportunities for improvements and performs troubleshooting, testing, documenting, and work with cross-functional teams.
Business Partnership - Engages with business and other functions regarding existing or new business activities and tax requirements for areas of responsibility. Provides tax guidance to influence decisions and involves broader indirect tax team or manager as needed.
Planning and Projects - Evaluates changes to tax planning, policies, or business activities for areas of responsibility and explain financial and operational benefits, risks, and costs of opportunities to managers. May lead or support special projects as assigned.

Internal/External Key Contact - Manages working relationships with internal teams and external customers, suppliers, service providers and tax authorities regarding tax requirements and issues. Acts as the main point

We'd love to hear from people with:

Progressive experience with multi-jurisdictional indirect tax responsibilities. 3-5 yrs
Experience utilizing finance/accounting systems and reporting tools for required data for tax purposes. 3-5 yrs
Indirect tax regulatory research, interpretation, and application to business activities. 3 yrs
Indirect tax requirements for business or tax systems, including, rules, classifications, and rate support. 1 yr

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in accounting, business or finance or other related fields
JD or masters/graduate degree in tax, law, business preferred (or candidate)
Certified Public Accountant, licensed attorney and/or Institute of Professionals in Taxation CMI certification preferred (or candidate)
