SCOPE OF POSITION
* As a Laser Processing Engineer on our team, your role will encompass the development of innovative laser processes and engineering of new laser processing hardware and systems.
* We apply engineering principles and fundamental process understanding to develop new technologies for laser material processing of glass and ceramics, as well as modify and improve laser tool design.
* You should have background in physics or engineering, a strong familiarity with optical systems, along with experience with a range of lasers.
* This position entails new process development for a diverse range of materials, and you should be comfortable prototyping, developing, and deploying novel hardware and process solutions.
* Construction of opto-mechanical systems, precision motion, electronics and controls, programming and lab automation skills, are all skill sets that enhance the ability to excel in this role. The ability to compile data and perform data analysis is essential. Does this sound like you?
DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Laser processing support through all stages of innovation (including manufacturing).
* Support laser processing & engineering team through the work on projects that require laser processing, technology delivery for new laser processing systems and provide innovative solutions based on laser processing results.
* Support manufacturing through laser processing and engineering, delivery of processes and applications with results to improve both current and new processes in order to fully meet customer requirements.
* Support startup of new designs/processes.
* Strengthen laser processing and engineering capabilities aligned with the needs of Cornings Manufacturing Technology and Engineering (MT&E) and Science and Technology (S&T) communities.
* Development of laser processes and engineering associated hardware to process new materials, new part geometries, or improvement in precision, quality, throughput, or yield.
* Disciplined execution of experiments.
* Be an active member of the laser processing & engineering team, work cooperatively with other specialists on the team to create process and hardware solutions.
* Work interactively with people across all organizations (RD&E and Manufacturing).
WORK LOCATION
* Based in Corning, NY
* On-site assignments at manufacturing operations possible
TRAVEL
* Our travel is project dependent and does require some flexibility.
* Typically less than 20%, mostly Europe and Asia, US.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
* We look for highly qualified, experienced individuals with at least a Bachelors degree in Physics, Optical Engineering, Optical Physics, or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
* If you have an advanced degree in Physics, Optical Physics, Optical Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), specialized in lasers and laser processing, we strongly encouraged to apply.
* We require 4+ years laser processing and engineering development experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
* Hands-on experience with construction and building of opto-mechanical systems, laser beam delivery, and related design and engineering principles.
* Ability to work with team members across variety of technology fields (e.g. physics, chemistry, material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) to solve system-level problems as part of developing new processes or new hardware.
* Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with laser/matter interactions.
* Demonstrated experience in hardware platform definition and development (includes lasers, optics, mechanics, software, algorithms, data analysis, etc.).
* Measurements and measurement equipment expertise.
* Data analysis skills: ability to use the PC to analyze process data and trends to reach conclusions that help solve laser process problems.
DESIRED SKILLS
* Industrial Experience: Laser processing & engineering experience specific to glass processing and laser processing systems integration. Preference would be given to those individuals with experience working on Corning Laser Technologies systems.
* Technical: Understanding of glass technology, glass compositions/types, methods of glass forming and manufacture, and laser cutting of glass. Knowledge of statistical analysis tools, design of experiments (DOEs), statistical process control (SPC), and other process control/analysis techniques is a plus.
SOFT SKILLS
* Do you have strong interpersonal skills effective at interacting and communicating across varying payroll levels?
* Are you able to work in a team environment to solve problems or produce a product?
* Confident presentation skills that convince customers and management of technical direction ability to tailor message to the audience.
