Job Description

This position is within the Fisher BioServices business unit of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The Transportation Supervisor manages and coordinates daily operations of the Commercial Transportation department, ensuring company standards, maintain dispatch sheet daily, budgeting and cost reduction initiatives associated with frozen specimen transportation. Responsibility involves all transportation-related functions for equipment movement within commercial operations to ensure the achievement of departmental and company objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Manages trucks and drivers in scheduling using DOT guidelines.
* Tracks and reports required data for state and local gas/mileage tax purposes.
* Ensures all DOT and OSHA safety standards are in compliance at all times.
* On-call 24/7 as required supporting HAZMAT transportation and requirements.
* Ensures all routine maintenance is performed in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
* Develops annual department budget and provide variance analyses as needed.
* Identifies and implements continuous improvement for optimizing delivery and cost efficiencies.
* Represents the transportation department during communications/meetings with all internal and external customers.
* Serves as the lead contact with customers, sales, and distribution operations for all deliveries.
* Provides regular performance feedback and direction to drivers to support their growth and development.
* Provides status updates on current projects and provide direction/visibility to new initiatives.
* Manages employee training and conduct performance reviews.
* Manages daily maintenance of transportation related databases.
* Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner.
* Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.

Basic Minimum Qualifications: The qualifications listed below are representative of knowledge, skill and/or ability. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to complete each essential duty.

* Requires proficiency in personal computer skills, specifically Microsoft office and Lotus Notes.
* Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Requires excellent interpersonal, customer focused, problem solving, and planning/organization skills.
* Requires ability to work flexible hours as needed including on-call to over-the-road driver teams.
* Requires ability to find solutions and effectively plan and coordinate maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance strategies.

Education/ Experience:

* Requires High School diploma; Bachelor2019s degree in a related field preferred.
* Requires 3+ years transportation operations including routing and scheduling experience.
* Requires thorough knowledge of CDL/DOT, Maryland and federal laws and regulations on transportation.
* Requires thorough knowledge of trucks and transport refrigeration equipment maintenance and repair including associated electronic controls.

Certificates and/ or Licenses:

* CDL B license
* Hazmat Endorsement
* Blood Borne Pathogens Training.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Manages all drivers in the transportation department.

Work Schedule:

8AM to 5PM core hours with additional hours as required. May be required to work non-traditional work week/hours, and overnight stays.

Work Conditions/Physical Requirements:

* Requires ability to work in a cold environment with exposure to dry ice, liquid nitrogen cryogenics, hazardous and infectious agents, marked changes in temperature.
* May work from a platform ladder.
* Must use personal protective equipment and adhere to safety protocols.
* Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, and push up to 1,500 lbs.
* Must be able to process and handle materials frozen on dry ice (-8000B0C) or liquid nitrogen (-19600B0C) for up to 6 hours per day.
* Must be able to work in walk-in freezers or refrigerators periodically.
* Must be able to use a computer up to 6 hours per day.
* Must be able to drive automotive equipment, and load and unload equipment into and out of company vehicle.
