Summary Statement
Reviews and approves fire alarm system construction plans with accompanying engineering calculations and specifications. Ensures fire alarms systems comply with appropriate codes, ordinances and manufacturer-specific criteria. Conducts field inspections as required. Meets with contractors, engineers, and/or the public to clarify project scope and code intent. Provides code interpretations based on code intent and city ordinances and/or policies. Works independently while making decisions that requiring technical discretion and sound judgment. Work is performed under general supervision.
Essential Functions
Reviews and approves fire alarm system plans with accompanying engineering calculations and specifications. Ensures fire alarms systems comply with adopted Fire Codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) design standards, and ordinances. Creates plan review reports documenting compliance of plans with adopted codes and ordinances, required corrections, and necessary additional information. Enters plan review reports, testing, and completion compliance documentation into permit tracking database. Verifies identified design deficiencies have been corrected prior to final approval. Receives, records and archives as-built fire alarm drawings. Participates in the facilities permit plan review program. (70%)
Conducts field inspections of fire alarm systems and building life safety systems to verify compliance with approved plans and requirements of the International Fire Code, applicable NFPA standards and manufacturer specifications and listings. Coordinates with other inspector groups to assure that final fire approvals are achieved prior to the issuance of a certificate of occupancy or letter of completion. (10%)
Provides technical assistance to contractors, engineers and others regarding code interpretations and clarification of requirements. Develops code interpretations based on code intent and direction found in city ordinances and/or policies. Participates in professional organizations on fire alarm issues and codes. Provides technical assistance to Fire Department personnel. (10%)
Conducts plan intake meetings with contractors to ensure complete plan submittals and that proper submittal procedures are maintained. Resolves conflicts and communicates options for code compliance. Participates in early assistance meetings with permit applicants enrolled in the project management program. Explains fire permit review processes to designers, builders, the public, and various department staff. (10%)

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Requires education and/or experience to attain the following:
Associates degree in engineering, construction management or related field with a minimum four years' experience in fire alarm system design or installation and building or fire codes; or National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technician (NICET) Level II certification and a minimum of 3 years' experience in fire alarm system design, review or installation or equivalent combination.
Knowledge of the International Fire Code, International Building Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards and United Laboratories (UL) directories.
Ability to accurately read and interpret plans, specifications, engineering reports and calculations for fire alarm systems; intermediate level arithmetic; perform battery calculations; effectively communicate technical information both orally and in writing; write technical reports and correspondence; operate computers and use word processing software at an appropriate level for efficient job performance; work effectively under time constraints and deadlines; safely navigate job sites and comply with OSHA requirements; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably in fire protection, or an equivalent combination. National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technician (NICET) Level III or IV certification, or 10 years' experience in fire alarm system design and review. Possess or have the ability to obtain ICC certification as Fire Inspector I and II and Fire Plans Reviewer.
Licensing And Other Requirements
NICET level II Certification.
Valid driver's license.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 10 lbs, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 35 lbs and rarely lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Also the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 10 lbs, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs and rarely pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs. The noise level is rarely loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employees work in/at heights, confined spaces and are exposed to mechanical, electrical hazards. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Must be able to safely navigate construction sites. Work includes protected exposure to chemicals.
