Basic Function

LyondellBasell is staffing for a Laboratory Specialist for the Channelview, TX Manufacturing Complex, located 18 miles from downtown Houston. Our 4,000-acre Channelview Complex consists of two olefin units at the north side facility that manufacture ethylene, propylene, butadiene and benzene. The south side facility uses many of these products to produce propylene oxide, styrene monomer and other derivatives.

The Laboratory Specialist is expected to function as a Subject Matter Expert in the maintenance and care of laboratory equipment, including physical properties of site materials, chromatography, environmental compliance programs, and a steward of LIMS.

Roles & Responsibilities

* Understand targets on intermediate streams, product specifications on finished products, compliance samples and specific testing requirements for each.
* Provide technical assistance on environmental issues related to permit; compliance, regulations, or departmental policies
* Ensure that instruments are available and ready for use
* Understand LIMS operation and workflow relative to testing jobs and provide support and training
* Fully understand how test calibrations are performed and train Technicians in correct calibration procedures
* Provide Intermediate/Advance Level equipment maintenance for problems that Technicians cannot solve
* Assist the Chemists in implementation of new technologies, including installation and initial calibration of new test equipment
* Available for call-outs and to occasionally work after hours including nights and weekends

Min. Qualifications

* Minimum 5 or more years manufacturing laboratory experience in a chemical plant laboratory plus 2-year laboratory technician (or comparable) degree or 8 years manufacturing laboratory experience.
* Dedicated to safe work processes including strong support for site safety practices.
* Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop a team environment.
* Ability to interact with FLSs, Unit Specialists, Technicians, Operators and Technical Staff
* Thorough knowledge of the Laboratory Work Process and its relevance to the business.

Min. Qualifications (cont.)

* Ability to troubleshoot QC laboratory instrumentation problems and perform needed repairs with minimum of supervision or aid. Must understand when to escalate maintenance problems to Advanced Level Equipment Management.
* Understand computer use in the QC laboratories, including computer-controlled instrumentation and LIMS used in QC operations.
* Must possess mechanical and analytical knowledge of the workings of QC laboratories test equipment and support instrumentation.
* Knowledge of theory and operation of QC test instrumentation, including advanced troubleshooting skills.
* Understand laboratory test equipment reliability requirements and work to assure that all assigned test equipment meets these reliability requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

* College education with a science degree and 5+ years in a non-routine technical laboratory preferred
