PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Software Engineering Manager serves as Team Digitals practice lead and provides mentorship and coaching to software engineers across the product and platform portfolio, while partnering with IT and business teams to provide the necessary leadership to shape customer-centric solutions that drive business outcomes. Provides comprehensive consultation to business unit and IT management and staff at the highest technical level to ensure highest quality delivery.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Provide technical expertise to IT and business teams to deliver software engineering solutions that achieve business results
* Ensure appropriate implementation of technology through high-quality, secure, and scalable engineering practices aligned to the latest industry standards and best practices
* Drive a culture of cross-functional collaboration and set the standard of engineering excellence
* Provide technological expertise and guidance to technical leads, software engineers, and IT Leaders to ensure sound technical decision making
* Drive and advance standards definition for engineering processes
* Oversee process improvement efforts and ensure adoption of standard processes and procedures that deliver sustainable top quartile cost and performance levels
* Advance software engineering workflow, tooling, and standards
* Contribute to advancing CI/CD pipeline and automation targets
* Provide technology, tool and process guidance to Agile teams
* Coach and mentor software engineers across digital portfolio as the practice lead
* Promote diversity and foster teamwork, collaboration, and a learning organization
* Build a culture of growth across engineering and other disciplines and organize opportunities for team learning and cross-training
* Help shape engaging engineering culture, from initial onboarding to ongoing employee experience
* Work in a consultative fashion to improve communication, collaboration and alignment amongst teams inside and outside of the organization
* Establish, maintain and enhance relationships with business and IT partners
* Maintain awareness of trends and issues in area of technical expertise, evaluate new technologies or technology opportunities, and provide analysis of their potential impact to advance the business
* Assist in evaluating software engineering talent for fulltime or contracting roles
* Operate utilizing standard processes as defined in the organization and within the Management Model
* Provide input to IT managers on performance of IT personnel to assist in performance evaluations, career development, and recognition

Qualifications

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

* Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related discipline and total 8-10+ years in a software engineering role, and experience successfully collaborating with Product Management, User Experience Design, Agile teams (e.g., SCRUM), and DevSecOps or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
* At least 3 years of experience in an engineering management or leadership role
* Mastery in multiple programming languages and platforms
* Always willing to learn and experiment with new technologies and techniques
* Appropriate technical skills:
* 5+ years of experience working across the full stack for application development using Object-Oriented technologies, as well as strong service-oriented design and engineering experience, familiarity with AJAX, Jscript frameworks (e.g., Angular, Knockout and Node.js), GIT, CI/CD, and API management.
* 5+ years of experience shipping and supporting high-performance, high-volume web applications in a cloud environment
* Familiarity with Java EE, Experience in designing and developing for RDBMS like Oracle and SQL Server. Strong understanding and experience using REST, JSON, SOAP etc.
* Strong experience with the latest front end engineering practices
* Experience with latest web technologies, tools, and best coding practices
* Expertise in HTTP, web application architecture, scalability, performance optimization, reliability, deployment, monitoring, security
* Proven leadership capability
* Enjoy coaching and mentoring software engineers to support their understanding of best practices and aid in their professional development
* Ability to create an open environment for honest and open discussion of all issues and opportunities amongst team members and collaborators
* Strong judgment, excellent analytical ability and consulting skills
* Ability share a vision and solicit support for software engineering recommendation across IT and business partner stakeholders
* Operates independently with little supervision
* Excellent communications skills and ability to work effectively with Solution Architecture, technical leads, IT and business management, and with vendors

Preferred:

* Experience working with Microsoft Azure or other cloud computing service
* Experience with native mobile engineering
* Strong understanding of change management techniques associated with new technology implementation
