Department Overview

Our Applied Technology organization puts some of Motorola Solutions' brightest minds on unique, highly challenging projects. Based on decades of experience with our customers, we apply leading-edge technologies to support security and safety throughout the world.

We engineer our products from start to finish and manufacture them in-house. We're known for low volume and high capability with focused specialization in areas including customization of commercial products to extend and transform their capabilities. We can't tell you much more about what we do, but we can tell you it's amazing.

Job Description

We are looking for an adaptable, skilled Linux and Android OS Software Engineer. Our team works on a variety of tasks, requiring a willingness to tackle whatever area of expertise our systems require.

On any given day, you may get the opportunity to work through all the layers of the Android software architecture including the Linux kernel, bootloaders, filesystems, cellular modem stack, Android framework, and applications.

This is more than a gig. People stay with our organization a long time because of the meaningful, interesting work that we do. Our engineers love a challenge, get to work in small teams and make systems do amazing things they were never designed to do.

We build custom products for a variety of customers. We are the experts; our customers come to us with their challenges, and they look to us to propose innovative solutions. Our engineers have tremendous latitude to problem solve, and are given the responsibility and accountability to implement solutions.

This is not a place where you do the same thing and work on the same code project to project. Flexibility and embracing whatever work comes your way is essential. Not much of what we do comes with a manual, and our kind of engineers like it that way.

The ideal candidate will have:

* Strong skills in C. Java is also desirable.

* Experience in Linux Kernel development, including device drivers

* Robust understanding of embedded software development practices, including build configuration/compiling/linking, troubleshooting/debugging, and SCM (we use Git/Gerrit/Jenkins)

You will stand out from the pack if you also have skills in some of our other technology areas. If not, these are things you can expect to pick up as you go:

* Agile development processes and tools (SCRUM, Jira, Jenkins CI)

* Linux/Android security

* Cryptography & Public Key Infrastructure

* Qualcomm platform experience

* Java and/or Kotlin Android application development experience

* Material Design UI/UX experience

* AWS experience

* Cellular protocol experience, especially cellular technologies (LTE, UMTS, etc)

One requirement of your employment in this position will be that you obtain a government security clearance within 15 months after your start date. Motorola Solutions personnel are available to discuss the government security clearance process with you. Contact your recruiter if you have questions regarding this process.

You must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain necessary security clearance as required by government contract.

We pioneered mobile communications in the 1930s with car radios and public safety networks. We made the equipment that carried the first words from the moon in 1969. In 1983 we led the communications revolution with the first commercial handheld cellular phone and system. Today, as a global industry leader, excellence in innovation continues to shape our future.

We take what we learn in the field and bring it back to the lab to create products that will function under extreme conditions and networks that will reliably support those products.
