Business Summary:

VMWare is designing a visionary new Clustered Operations workflow for managing the ESXi hypervisor and transforming SDDC lifecycle management. This requires a complete rewrite of the design for how lifecycle operations are managed across various components and solutions. There is an urgent need for a senior level engineer to lead the team through this significant transition in designing and implementing the new approach.

Job Role and Responsibility:

This role is the lead engineering role for the team that is radically re-designing the way the ESXi and SDDC lifecycle are managed for on-premises, Cloud and Edge deployments. The ideal candidate for this role will have the technical chops to command the respect of a team of highly skilled developers, while at the same time, the communication capabilities to evangelize and co-opt all the other teams in the company (and their leads) that are impacted and need to integrate with our designs. This ideal candidate will be a thought leader, who has the technical breadth and experience to understand the various complex systems that our designs interact with, and can utilize this background to propose, lead and execute on innovative new solutions for these complex problems.

The responsibilities for this role are the following:

- Define innovative new solutions for our domain Desired State Platform for ESXi and, in the future, other SDDC components, at scale.

- Lead the team in technical discussions, architectural decisions and problem-solving exercises.

- Be the voice of the team in other fora, both internal and external be ready to evangelize and defend our designs so that other teams see the benefits in the new architecture and sign on to do the integration.

- Interact with senior engineering leadership both within our Business Unit and other BUs to understand their concerns and questions be ready to answer and work through any issues that get raised in such interactions

- Work with other functions within the Company (such as Product Management, Technical Marketing, Documentation etc.) to convert customer/market requirements into viable product solutions

- Mentor the teams other members on design/coding and help grow their technical careers

Required Skills:

- 15+ years of experience, currently working in a senior technical leadership role (such as Principal Engineer or Distinguished Engineer)

- Must have a broad technical background in client-server technologies, with an excellent understanding of the full software stack

- An excellent programming background at the systems level of the software stack - A good understanding of Networking and Storage fundamentals

- Excellent knowledge of distributed systems, databases, algorithms, data structures and object-oriented concepts

- Deep understanding of virtualization concepts Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to seamlessly interact with technical/non-technical audiences

- MS in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering or similar fields.

Preferred Skills:

Preferred language experiences are C++ or C, Python and Java Good understanding of UI/UX requirements
