Job Description

General Duties and Responsibilities

* Overseeing all cargo transfer procedures as the PIC, including completing bills of lading and gauging reports.
* Operating barge machinery in a safe manner.
* Preventing oil spills, loss of cargo, and pollution.
* Ensuring that all cargo transfer equipment and procedures comply with federal, state, and company laws, policies, and regulations.
* Responsible for the safety of the towing vessel.
* Responsible of informing the Wheelman on watch of all known conditions of the vessel.
* Reporting any and all hazardous or unsafe conditions and making corrections when able.
* Monitoring product level in tanks, ensuring no tank is overfilled.
* Operating diesel engines, cargo pumps, and other vessel machinery, and maintaining in good working order.
* Developing training abilities and instructing trainees.
* Operational duties including, but not limited to: making up the tow; dropping, spotting, and switching barges; assisting the vessel and tow in making locks. Performing the various tasks necessary to carry out the above, including making a coupling, operating winches and ratchets, and handling, splicing, and throwing lines.
* Maintenance duties including, but not limited to: developing a complete knowledge of all equipment and barges; troubleshooting barge problems; chipping and painting vessels and barges; repairing flame screens, cleaning P/V valves, greasing winches, and ensuring general maintenance standards so that all equipment is kept neat, clean, and orderly.
* Housekeeping duties including, but not limited to: cleaning the boat, quarters, wheelhouse, and galley; dewatering barges as needed; cooking when needed, and performing other chores as directed by the Master of the vessel.
* Standing lookout or riding the head of the tow as lookout when needed.
* Participating in all safety, fire fighting, and spill meetings and drills.
* Performing assigned duties in emergency situations.
* Remaining up-to-date with all relevant licenses and certifications.
* Knowing the purpose of and using PPE when needed.
* Regular attendance at the worksite is required.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Previous experience as a Tankerman with petroleum products.
* Hold a valid license as Tankerman-PIC.
* Hold a valid TWIC.
* Must be able to fulfill physical requirements, including being able to lift and carry 50-100 lbs.
* Know when and how to use emergency equipment and PPE.
* Able to communicate and work with supervisors and other crew members.
* Able to live in close quarters with other crew members.
* Must be dependable with a stable work history.
* Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
* Ability to maintain stability under pressure and be flexible and willing to modify plans and behavior when necessary.
* Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
* Refer to the List of Interpersonal/Leadership Qualities for additional terms that might apply to the position.
* Ability to work overtime as necessary.
* Ability to be a positive representative of the Company both internally and externally.
* Ability to work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and customers.
* Must be committed to working safely at all times.

Experience/Education:

* Hold a valid license as Tankerman-PIC.
* Hold a valid TWIC.
* High school diploma / GED or equivalent experience is required.
* Minimum of 3 years of experience in Marine Industry, is required.
* A recognized certification in field/industry, such as Name of Certification is a plus/required.
* Requires a valid drivers license.

Travel:

Employee is responsible for his/her own transportation to/from the vessel if they live within 75 miles of the vessel location.

* Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
* Work requires physical efforts associated with using the computer and phones to access information.

* Occasionally in an office environment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.

This position is required to be performed at the work site during regularly scheduled hours. Physical presence at the work site is required.
