KEY FUNCTIONS

Administrative Supervision:

Works closely with the Clinical Research Group Director and Medicine Department Administrator to provide direction to the patient care team.

Hires, supervises and mentors clinical research personnel, providing leadership and training for effective clinical trial execution.

Supervises the educational activities for the research staff.

Assures that policies/procedures of the institution and department, and novel technologies, are effectively communicated to the staff.

Participates in pre-study visits, start-up meetings and audits with Protocol Teams, industry and institutional monitors.

Evaluates performance of staff, maintains documentation, and manages disciplinary action as needed.

Assigns each protocol to clinical research staff and ensures fluid communication between said staff and all members of the Protocol Team.

Conducts routine personnel meetings.

Program Development

Participates in the GU CRG continued development, strategic planning and financial forecasts.

Participates in the planning and implementation of GU CRG clinical research activities at internal and external locations.

Participates in the writing of research policies/processes and implements quality assurance initiatives.

Ensures that clinical research conducted by the Department meets all IRB, federal and/or other guidelines and policies.

Participates in the review and determination of eligibility of protocols and Letters of Intent (LOIs) for available funding sources.

Participates in writing of grant applications, revisions, and annual reports as requested.

Participates in troubleshooting, negotiations, and amendments to clinical research agreements, conforming to Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Institutional, and Departmental guidelines as well as Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and protection of principal investigator and research staff.

Collaborations and External Communications

Serves as liaison with funding agents, sponsors, and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) at all stages of protocol development.

Assists with writing and submission of LOIs for National Cancer Institute (NCI) mass solicitations and individual concepts for industry protocols.

Facilitates applicable federal, institutional, and sponsor clinical trial processes, approvals and requirements.

Represents the Department at institutional and external meetings and gatherings.

Coordinates strategies to enhance collaborations between investigators and clinical or research scientists/fellows.

Training and Professional Development

Attends appropriate departmental meetings and institutional continuing education programs.

Shares information and develops educational presentations for Clinical Research Group (CRG) and departmental meetings.

Adopts novel technologies as needed to adapt to the evolving landscape of clinical research.

Maintains knowledge of current Code of Federal Regulation and Good Clinical Practice guidelines.

Maintains a high level of professional expertise and technical proficiency in regards to clinical research, and an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the research trial process.

Participates in National organizations that are oncology and research focused and attends approved off-site meetings, workshops and conferences.

Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.

EDUCATION

Required:

Bachelor's of Science in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

Five years of registered nursing experience to included two years of research nursing experience and two years of supervisory experience.

Required degree may be substituted for experience as a MDACC Research Nurse Supervisor on a one-to-one basis.

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
