Job Description

KEY FUNCTIONS

Intervention: Participates in the coordination and monitoring of patient treatment in clinical trials.

Scheduling tests before, during and after treatment. Administering investigational and non-investigational medications as required by the protocol. Obtaining pharmacology and other required laboratory specimens for research purposes. Monitoring patient responses during treatment on clinical trials and performing general follow up as required by protocol. Teaching patient and family about administration and side effects of medication. In-servicing nursing and technical staff on the management of patients in specific clinical trials. Executing primary research design including double and single blind studies.

Evaluation: Monitors, and in collaboration with the physician, evaluates patient response to protocol treatment .

Assisting in determining response to protocol treatment. Grading of toxicities as defined in specific protocols. Reporting toxicities and adverse drug reactions to protocol sponsor and IRB. Entering required research data into the PDMS/CORe or case report forms. Assisting the physician in the evaluation of data collected from specific clinical trials.

Assessment: Screens patients for protocol eligibility and participation in clinical trials.

Assessing inpatients and/or outpatients for protocol eligibility. Identifying patient and family educational needs regarding treatment and follow up on specific clinical trials. Identifying nursing staff in-service needs regarding administration and monitoring of patients on specific clinical trials.

Administration: Provides training and development of Research Nurses and other research personnel .

Assisting in developing new staff training and continuing education modules. Participating in forums organized by the Clinical Research Nurse Committee (CRNC) and acting as liaison between CRNC and department research nurse group. Providing administrative oversight to research nurses and other designated research personnel in absence of Research Nurse Manager, or as required by the clinical research section.

Clinical Research: Assists in protocol and research instrument design and data analysis.

Assisting physicians in protocol analysis utilizing computer statistical data management packages. Collaborating with physicians and/or protocol sponsor regarding protocol design, implementation and evaluation. Participating in new protocol review to improve the design of clinical and logistical practice. Assisting in performing quality assurance by auditing research data as indicated/assigned.

EDUCATION

Required:

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

One year of registered nursing experience.

Preferred:

Prior Research Nurse experience.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
