Scientist I Protein Characterization and Formulation Development
The Biologics Preformulation Group is an integral part of the Drug Product Development Organization at AbbVie. The primary function of the Preformulation Group is to evaluate the physicochemical properties of biological drug candidates designed for specific therapeutic targets, identify liabilities, and to promote the appropriate candidates with the highest likelihood of success into further pipeline advancement. We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated scientist to join the AbbVie Preformulation Group based in Worcester, MA.
Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct laboratory-based analytical chemistry and formulation research activities with protein-based drug candidates. Perform experiments to evaluate physicochemical properties of new biologic entities (antibodies, bispecific antibodies, antibody drug conjugates, fusion proteins) to identify any liabilities that could impact later-stage drug development.
* Execute experimental protocols, collect results, and perform data analysis independently.
* Maintain excellent documentation of all work including electronic lab notebooks, test methods and protocols.
* Prepare and deliver concise scientific presentations of experimental results and assist in authoring detailed scientific technical reports.
* Stay current with the scientific literature and support new scientific initiatives.
* Oversee maintenance of key laboratory equipment and perform simple maintenance activities.
* Build strong relationships with other team members and across groups.
* Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, and GxP compliance.
Qualifications
* Advanced degree in Protein Chemistry or related field (e.g., Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Pharmaceutical Sciences)
* BS with typically 4+ years biopharmaceutical industry experience.
* MS with typically 2+ years biopharmaceutical industry experience.
* Hands-on experience in protein biochemical and biophysical characterization, developability assessment and stress stability studies in support of candidate selection of diverse biologics (peptides, mAbs, bispecific antibody formats, antibody drug conjugates, immunocytokines, and fusion proteins).
* Detailed knowledge of protein structure, protein stability, biophysical characterization, formulation screening and development.
* Strong expertise in protein biophysical and biochemical characterization techniques, including size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), cation exchange chromatography (CEX), hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC), Heparin affinity HPLC, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), dynamic light scattering (DLS), size-exclusion multi-angle light scattering (SEC-MALS), UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, imaged capillary isoelectric focusing (icIEF), capillary electrophoresis sodium dodecyl sulfate (CE-SDS), particle and viscosity measurements. Must be willing and able to learn new technologies as needed.
* Mass spectrometry experience is desirable but not essential
* Demonstrated track record of independent thinking, creativity, and scientific accomplishment.
* Highly responsible and self-motivated with the ability to ensure high quality and timely deliverables.
* Great team player with excellent collaboration and communication skills.
