Job Description

The Vice President, Research will be focused on enhancing research excellence to ensure it reflects the status of the nation's top cancer research organization.

Additionally, the VP will:
* Oversee and nurture research departments to become hubs of research excellence; work in collaboration with the Chief Scientific Officer and translational and clinical research peers to implement the overall scientific strategy for the institution.
* Lead the institution's scientists in demonstrating and adhering to the highest level of research integrity, expanding our recruitment efforts to attract top tier scientists from trainees to tenure track investigators of diverse backgrounds.
* Act as a positive change agent, respecting the culture while challenging the status quo. Demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, equity in science, and supporting how these goals and values are systemically advanced.
* Earn the respect of colleagues through professional achievement, servant leadership, strong emotional intelligence (EQ), drive, commitment to personal leadership development and high standards of professionalism.

Key Functions
1. Build on and expand the institution's capabilities to enhance mechanistic science
2. Drive and develop capabilities and expertise for current and future projects in the areas of cancer research and early development.
3. Advocate the need for cutting edge science and scientific innovation through prioritization of research projects (internal and external) which will ultimately provide the greatest return of investment with respect to benefiting patients.
4. Ensure departments provide training and implement opportunities for translational and clinical investigators and trainees.
5. Articulate a strong vision for research working with senior leadership and world-renowned scientists to accelerate team-based science
6. Recruit, develop and retain top talent in key research programs
7. Collaborate with multiple diverse constituents, including faculty and staff, to understand the changing landscape of oncology research and translational science, identify opportunities including the need for cross-disciplinary approaches to problem solving
8. Familiarity with national research policy and a track record of promoting external research funding, federal and state support, and strategic research initiatives
9. Partner with faculty to promote inter- and multi-disciplinary research and to support a full spectrum of research inquiry and discovery across the sciences.
10. Establish research infrastructure which will promote strategic research recruitments
11. Elevate the quality of research publications and conference presentations
12. Oversee the allocation of research and lab space and forecast institutional needs, as it relates to expansion, recruitment, and future scientific investments.
13. Partner with facilities to ensure efficient and effective operation of labs and vivarium
14. Oversees and directs the budget management of scientific research programs and allocation of resources.
15. Lead the overall operation and integration of scientific cores
16. Collaborate with faculty leadership to develop plans for obtaining grants and promoting scientific advances as it relates to the institution's mission.

Qualifications

PhD, MD or MD/PhD with a minimum of 10+ years of academic and/or industry experience in both cancer research and translational medicine.

Technical experience and Competencies must include:

Broad knowledge across R&D-related; sciences and practices. Track record of leadership in a high performing research institution.
* Outstanding, internationally recognized reputation in the field of cancer research and, along with a proven record of success as demonstrated by publications, presentations and academic experience.
* Demonstrated strong leadership skills with high degree of transparency within a complex, multi-cultural matrixed organization.
* Inspirational leader who will inspire others in the pursuit of new ideas in the search for oncology cures.
* Built, led and developed high-performance, matrixed teams and structures the work accordingly to obtain critical contributions and milestones.
* Excellent writing, presentation, organizational and written/verbal communication skills.
* Impeccable reputation and recognition in the scientific community.
* Demonstrated leadership skills for team building, facilitation, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation.
* Ability to plan, identify risks, anticipate issues and outcomes and respond strategically, tactically and scientifically while balancing short-term and long-term strategic objectives.
* Ability to work effectively across multiple functions, at all levels of management; lead multidisciplinary project teams and maintain project schedules on multiple programs.
* Ability to work well in a team environment, and to also work effectively independently.
* Strong established external network of academic and industry partners, corresponding to a collaborative publication track record.
