Strategic Quantitative Modeling and Analysis (SQA&M) Department

Department Summary

SQA&M is a group within the Strategy & Analytics (SA) department. SQA&M currently has eight professionals. It is a team characterized as an internal consulting group that provides quantitative analysis, real-options analysis, RFO valuation model development and support, forward curve development support, cost-effectiveness, and avoided cost services for clients throughout PG&E.

The SQA&M unit resides within the Strategy and Analytics (SA) department, which is responsible for strategy development for PG&E, and decision-support analytics as applied to forecasting, and planning matters in wholesale and retail energy markets within and outside PG&E's service territory. SA is a department within the Energy Policy and Procurement (EPP) organization with approximately 40 members. SA provides analytical support for commercial decisions and regulatory advocacy. Issues in scope for SA include greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, combined heat and power (CHP), renewable and hydro curtailment, energy storage modeling and valuation, renewable integration, renewable pricing, avoided costs and cost effectiveness analysis for integrated demand and supply, which includes Demand-Side Management (DSM), and integrated resource planning (IRP).

Position Summary

The intern will report to a member of the SQA&M team and will participate in daily activities but with a focus to do research into Capacity markets in CAISO, PJM, NEISO, MISO, as well as areas where Capacity markets do not exist such as ERCOT. Learning about these markets in other countries is also in scope. The summer internships typically last 10 to 12 weeks and include a competitive salary.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for effectively and timely assisting staff in the SQA&M department in all matters, but not exclusively, relating to the items listed below:

1. Working with SQA&M Staff and others, understands the various ways - fundamentals, time series, regression analysis -- Capacity prices are analyzed within PG&E
2. Performs data visualization analysis and report generation of Capacity Markets using SAS and SAS JMP Pro.
3. Prepares presentations for distribution inside and outside SQA&M.
4. Writes documentation for models and procedures.
5. Meets deadlines
6. Performs knowledge transfer to SQA&M.

Qualifications

Minimum

* Qualified candidates will be working towards a Ph.D. degree in a combination of statistics, mathematics, finance, physics, Decision Analysis, Operations Research, or other analytical/ quantitative areas (students must be continuing their education towards degree during and/or after internship). They will have:

* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Knowledge of Financial and Real Options including Monte Carlo Simulation
* A strong interest on the unregulated energy sector and the regulated utility sector with a keen focus on capacity markets, energy prices, and A/S prices.
* Strong programming skills including knowledge of some of the following tools: SAS JMP, SAS, Python, Word, Excel, VBA, Matlab, and Xpress, @Risk and RiskOptimizer
* Strong proficiency with the following tools: One Note, Word, and PowerPoint skills
