Valley View Medical Center
The Nurse Extern, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, will perform various direct patient care activities in accordance with the Nursing Department policies and procedures.
Assumes personal accountability for organizational Mission, Vision and Core Values.
Will adhere to the standards of behavior, and HIPAA guidelines at all times.
Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN.
Appropriately documents all patient care given. Documentation must always be verified by the RN upon completion.
Will develop nursing knowledge, the ability to follow guidelines, communication and interpersonal skills, time management and bedside manner.
Monitors, records and communicate patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient and family.
Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, grooming, eating, and ambulation, monitoring vital signs, monitoring blood glucose levels, recording accurate intake and output on the unit to which assigned
Performs plan of care intervention, including taking vital signs, specimen collection, ambulation, basic patient care activities as delegated by an RN including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output
Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
May perform nursing skills in which they were deemed competent by the instructors of the nursing program during skills lab/classroom didactic, always under the direct supervision of an RN.
Observes for complications and/or deviations from patients baseline assessment.
Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in establishing a plan of care based upon an analysis of health, and needs of the patient and family.
Under the observation of the Registered Nurse, evaluates patient response to interventions and effectively communicates observations and patient needs to the Registered Nurse.
Administers medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse. The level of clinical judgment and proficiency of skill must be evaluated prior to medication administration.
Manages an increased number of patients and incorporates principles of time management into shift routine.

Job Requirements
Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent Preferred X Required
Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program Preferred X Required
Must have completed nursing clinicals and be in good standing in the Nursing Program.
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and function as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
Adheres to the standards of nursing care, patient safety guidelines and policies of the hospital.
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association required upon hire
Competencies: as validated by the nursing program instructor
Must possess basic computer skills
Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, and medical staff
Minimum Work Experience
Prefer experience in the healthcare setting
