Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Basic Qualifications

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess experience as a Naval nuclear operator, nuclear qualified test engineer, or carrier new construction/overhaul engineer; experience in steam generator chemical cleaning a plus. The person will possess reactor or steam plant knowledge, and some level of expertise in power piping design/analysis (operation, maintenance and repair, component selection/replacement, etc.), have graduated from an ABET accredited institution with a BS degree (mechanical, marine, nuclear or chemical engineering), and have excellent verbal and technical writing skills. Seeking a go-getter, capable of working with minimal oversight and looking for an opportunity to improve system operations. A self-starter who is open to new ways of approaching an aging fleet, introducing digital technology, industry state of the art technology, moving work faster, etc.

This position requires technical ability in the development of design and maintenance improvements for A4W steam generator chemical cleaning systems and mechanical components. From concept to implementation, the engineer will perform design studies (e.g., root cause analysis, new design development), identify life-cycle cost reductions, conduct laboratory testing, analyze results, develop integrated technical positions, and develop recommendations for customer (NNL) approval. Regular communication with the customer is expected. The engineer will perform liaison services to solve problems identified during equipment manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance. The engineer will develop maintain test instructions, technical manuals, and drawings.
