Supplier Quality Coordinator / Engineer

T&PS, Shared Services Generation & Transmission (G&T) Quality Department

This position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL.

JOB SUMMARY

The successful candidate will act as a Supplier Quality Coordinator on various Generation, Hydro, retrofit and Gas projects. This position will provide inspection and manufacturing expertise on mechanical equipment including boiler components, feedwater heaters, fans, structural steel, ductwork, pipe, wicket gates, turbine runners, and similar mechanical and electrical equipment. The incumbent will develop and manage surveillance plans, interact with project team members, and perform inspections, to ensure that purchased equipment meets all Southern Company expectations.

The successful candidate will determine the acceptability of equipment and material through witnessing manufacturing processes and tests. The incumbent will personally examine certain critical attributes at supplier shops to verify that the quality of equipment and material meets or exceeds Southern Companys technical and quality requirements as well as applicable codes, and standards. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of manufacturing and fabrication quality systems and their implementation. This position includes work in an office environment as well as field work including in suppliers shops.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

* Perform inspections and surveillance at supplier facilities

* Create and manage Project Quality Surveillance Plans

* Review and help revise specifications for enforceability

* Review suppliers Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)

* Conduct pre-fabrication meetings with suppliers

* Hire and manage 3rd party inspectors to conduct inspections at supplier facilities

* Conduct quality and technical capability assessments of supplier manufacturing facilities

* Write Quality Surveillance Reports (QSRs) documenting shop findings

JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

* Bachelors degree in relevant field is preferred

* Demonstrated experience in performing mechanical inspections, with an emphasis on welding

* Current or previous AWS CWI certification

* Current or previous Level II certification in PT, MT, RT and UT. Ability to interpret RT results is required

* Strong Knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, section VIII

* Strong Knowledge of AWS D1.1

* A working knowledge of shop operations including quality systems, procurement, equipment/material manufacturing, handling, and shipping

* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and standards to ensure correct implementation by the supplier

* A working knowledge of applicable ASME, AWS, ANSI, ASTM, ISO, and other standards to ensure suppliers comply with specified technical and quality requirements

* Exhibit a strong understanding of quality culture, quality assurance and quality control

* Excellent written and oral communication skills

* Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills

* Strong customer focus

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

* A moderate amount of travel will be required (approximately 50%), both domestic and international, but the position generally does not involve weekend travel
