Responsibilities

We are seeking Casualty Underwriters (UW) that will support our Excess & Surplus lines book of general liability and excess liability. As a Casualty Underwriter, under minimal direction, you are responsible for underwriting risks in a book of business to achieve company premium and profit goals. The UW is responsible for the overall management, business development, analysis and monitoring of a book of business. The UW should independently work within specific limits of authority on assignments utilizing underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations as well as company policies and procedures. Maintains and develops broker relationships, including addressing opportunities and areas of concern. Participates in product line management including product enhancements as well as corrective actions.

Focus is maintained on their assigned brokers to foster growth, understand of our business, market our appetite and manage initiatives as well as serve as the key point person for resolution of service issues.

Key roles/responsibilities include the ability to:

* Demonstrate broad knowledge of the business, the marketplace and company goals, objectives and performance measures through the effective delivery of all products and services
* Identify and coordinate customized coverage, service and product needs to specific clientsAct as a referral source on coverage and pricing
* Achieve profitable growth through effective use of underwriting and business skills in assigned territory or book of business. This requires utilization of current data to initiate customized information to interpret pricing and exposure trends in the book.
* Initiates appropriate actions to sustain profit which may include non-renewal, rate increases or applying pricing proposals utilizing advanced techniques
* Assess rate adequacy relative to exposure and identify and evaluate exposures for each risk
* Assess and prioritizes underwriting and service needs and the feasibility of their delivery
* Share specialized knowledge of exposures for industry or market segments
* Persuade customers in a preferred direction
* Build and lead effective client teams
* Negotiate advanced coverage issues
* Solicit customer feedback and bring resolution to issues
* Coach and develop staff on client management

Qualifications

Verus operates in a fast-paced environment that requires the ability to manage multiple, complex assignments and competing priorities. Candidates must be comfortable working in an ambiguous and dynamic environment.

* A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant underwriting experience
* Strong oral/written communication skills, displaying a positive attitude
* Detail-oriented person with initiative and ability to work in fast-paced team environment
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
* High sense of urgency and ability to function well in a high-volume and time sensitive environment
* Computer literate including use of Word, Excel and various project management tools
* Flexible and open to change and enhancements to help evolving in a competitive market
* Adaptive to adjusting priorities and/or work on multiple tasks
* Ability to travel, as needed
* Strong sense of ownership and accountability as a result of being highly motivated
* High school diploma or equivalent; college course work or degree preferred
