Job Description

The Materials Engineering Department, which functions within the Mechanical Product Team (MPT), is looking for an Engineer to participate as a member of the Materials Program Leads Section in the Materials Engineering Department. As a Materials Program Lead, the ideal candidate will be accountable for leveraging all of the Mechanical Product Team (MPT) and materials engineering disciplines for technical execution of all engineering required for the development and manufacturing of hardware. The Materials Program Lead is responsible for supporting all program milestones and providing materials engineering technical execution to the committed production schedule and cost. In addition, the Materials Program Lead is responsible for coordinating Materials Engineering resources to effectively meet programs requirements.

The Materials Program Lead will provide Materials Engineering support to programs design reviews, gate reviews, Material Review Board, Change Control Board, Process Change Board, and engineering peer reviews. They will also be responsible for the accuracy of technical output of each assignment, including Materials Engineering positions based on data and analyses. In addition, they will be responsible for interfacing with other organizations across the RMD Enterprise such as Mechanical Products, Mission Assurance & Quality, Operations, Reliability, and Supply Chain.

Key Responsibilities (essential functions):

* Provide Materials Engineering support for Programs CCB, MRB, PCB, ERB, PMCB
* Ensure peer reviews are conducted and Materials Engineering position is aligned with Program requirements
* Work closely with design personnel in the selection and approval of materials and finishes in new and updated designs
* Lead a Materials Engineering Team in the following activities:
* The development and/or validation of appropriate materials, material properties, and processes for use on existing and new products
* Coordinate analysis and documentation of alternate materials and obsolescence investigations
* Benchmark material technologies and methods of materials testing
* Ensure labor costs and estimated completion schedules provided by the Materials Engineering Sections are negotiated, understood and meet product/program commitments
* Provide resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes
* Participate on Failure Investigation Teams to provide technical support
* Be able to present technical position or data results summary to large technical audience (example: MMSTN, TIG, or ERB)

This position can be Salary Grade G08 (Senior Multi-disciplined Engineer I) or Salary Grade G09 (Senior Multi-disciplined Engineer II) based upon the applicants qualifications as they relate to the skills, leadership, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.

Required Skills, Experience & Education:

* A minimum of four (4) for Sr. Engineer I and/or Six (6) years for Sr. Engineer II of experience in:
* Materials problem solving; such as process improvements or choosing alternate material or protective coatings to address specific material issues.
* Materials characterization, or production engineering and/or competency with the use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
* Experience working with design and development, manufacturing and/or suppliers in materials engineering related design, development, and/or manufacturing projects.
* Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods.
* Some examples of mechanical test methods include tensile, compression, lap shear, hardness, lap shear, viscosity. Some examples of chemical analysis methods include FT-IR spectroscope, cure rate of adhesives, DMA, TMA, Gas Chromatography, etc.
* Bachelors degree in any of the following: Materials Science/Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, or related field.
* U.S. Citizenship is required

* Working experience with engineering drawings, material specifications and military specifications/standards
* Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
* Excellent documentation and technical writing skills
* Ability to efficiently use MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Powerpoint
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
* Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to perform root cause/corrective action
* Experience related to Material Review Boards, Material and Process Change Boards, Risk Boards, Engineering Review Boards
* Experience working on programs for Naval or Undersea applications
* Experience working with polymeric materials, metals, and/or corrosion mitigation techniques
* Broad knowledge of materials science with ability to collaborate with SMEs
* Ability to make Materials Engineering decisions for the program based on solid facts and data
