Minimum Education

Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy required.

Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Care Practitioner required.

Obtained RRT certification through the NBRC.

Through education, experience, and/or training the individual is qualified to work with neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient and demonstrates competency in performance of each essential job function.

Required Skills

Strong clinical skills with ability to react decisively in emergency situations.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department.

Ability to problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner.

Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments.

Essential Functions

Responsible for collaborating with other departments regarding resources and services for improved patient care.

Administers all modalities of Respiratory Care to all age groups and displays proficiency in all areas of job.

Performs job duties in a kind and courteous manner throughout each customer encounter and meets customers expectation as well as being considerate and helpful in all encounters.

Assesses the level of patient and family understanding of a procedure and provides a level of education appropriate to assure comprehension and compliance.

Completes all required in-services on an annual basis.

Maintains EOC standards by knowing and following procedures in emergency management, hazardous material management, life safety, fire safety, infection control and security.

Maintain a minimum of BLS certification.

Co-ordinates optimal patient care by cooperation with other disciplines.

Maintains accurate, complete, and timely records of preventive maintenance and quality control on blood gas analyzers.

Participates in orientation of new staff and students as well as co-workers from other departments as needed.

Participates in departmental and hospital Performance Improvement Program in order to improve outcomes.

Manage personal attendance to assure that absences from work for personal non occupational or family illness/ injury and or personal business do not violate the hospital leave policy.

Works as scheduled, without unplanned absences, arrives on time and ready to work.

Follows all department and hospital policies and procedures and adheres to all state, federal laws as well as complies with all Joint Commission and CAP guidelines.

Completes 10 Continuing Education requirements yearly in order to comply with licensing and to maintain current knowledge of respiratory care.

Performs work in an accurate and timely manner.

Demonstrates cost effective use of supplies and uses time wisely to reduce overtime when possible.

Functional Demands

Standing, sitting and bending are required.

Ability to lift 25 pounds and push/pull 150 pounds are required.

Ability to read and write and evaluate technical and medical information relative to the provision of Respiratory Care.

Ability to communicate in a variety of educational levels to address public, staff, family and medical staff questions regarding patient care.

Ability to hear, understand and take appropriate actions in response to communications from other individuals and to respond to alarms and monitors.

Ability to cope calmly and politely to stress from patients families, staff or other spontaneous work-related demands and to display a mature and responsible behavior, exhibiting a positive demeanor.

May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs or disinfecting agents and /or blood and body fluids in the course of daily activities.

May be exposed to injury by irrational and disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases and /or potentially dangerous equipment and needle sticks.

Works in an indoor patient care setting.

Works overtime if required to assure a high level of patient care.
