The research intern will perform security research involving systems software, cloud runtimes, compilers, computer architecture, and cryptography. We are looking for a candidate that is proficient with the Linux kernel and system libraries, runtimes for programming languages such as C, C++, Go, Rust, and the WebAssembly virtual ISA, open-source workflows and tools, and cloud orchestration frameworks and runtimes for microservices and Function-as-a-Service (FaaS).
Responsibilities may include:
- Analyzing and developing security architecture.
- Developing research prototypes and evaluating their performance and security efficacy on virtual platforms.
- Extending cloud orchestration frameworks and runtimes for microservices and FaaS.
- Modifying the Linux kernel.
- Developing new LLVM analysis and instrumentation passes.
- Threat assessments, design of security components, and vulnerability assessment
- The candidate investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products typically several years prior to landing on a product roadmap.
- Develops solutions to problems utilizing formal education, judgment and formal processes.
- Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art security principles, theories, attacks and contributes to literature and conferences

Qualifications

You must possess the minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Relevant experience can be obtained through school work, classes and project work, internships, and/ or work experience.

Minimum Requirements:
The candidate must be enrolled in a PhD degree program in Computer Science and/or Electrical Engineering with a focus on platform Security, core architecture, memory management. The candidate should possess strong analytic skills and ability to work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Programming in C/C++, assembly or WASM
- Research in at least one of the following areas: Platform Security, cryptography.
- 1+ year of experience with Git.
- 5+ years of C, C++ or Rust experience.
- 3+ years of debugging experience with gdb/lldb/idb.
- 1+ year of IA-32 assembly language experience
- 3+ years of experience with Linux-based operating systems and development environments, e.g. shell, ssh, and make.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience/knowledge in one or more of the following:
Computer architecture, trustworthy computing, anti-malware, compartmentalization, Microservices for cloud computing, browser security.
- 1+ year of experience developing substantial LLVM compiler enhancements or other compiler experience.
- 1+ years of experience in modifying the Linux kernel
- 2+ years of experience in security and/or cryptography
- 1+ year of experience with microservices or Function-as-a-Service orchestration frameworks and runtimes
- 1+ year experience modifying linker
- 1+ year experience with Go
- 1+ year experience with virtualization
