Facebook Reality Labs is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative interns with an interest in applied and fundamental research in fields related to perception with relevance to augmented and virtual reality.

The Applied Perception Science team is seeking amazing interns for 2021. The focus of this internship is to further perceptual research, informing the design of augmented reality systems. You will have the unique opportunity to work with the best-in-class researchers and engineers who are defining the future of these systems. We are accepting applications from students interested in (but not limited to) the following areas:

Spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity
Color vision
Motion perception
Computational modeling of the visual system
Visual Quality metrics
Visual ergonomics
Efficient coding
Text legibility
Spatial vision
Physiological optics
Vergence/accommodation interactions
Eye-movements

Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Intern, Applied Perception Science (PhD) Responsibilities

* Design and implementation of experiments or models that explore aspects of visual perception as it pertains to product architecture or design.

* Collaboration with and support of other researchers across various disciplines (human factors, optics, graphics).

* Communication of research agenda, progress and results over the course of the intern project.

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree in the field of Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a similar field.

* Creativity and quick problem solving capabilities.

* Track record of achieving results.

* Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.

* Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred Qualifications

* Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.

* Experience with visual perception.

* Ability to design and perform psychophysical experiments.

* Understanding of the graphics rendering pipeline.

* Understanding of display calibration.

* Demonstrated software engineering experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions or PhD papers.

* Knowledge of optics, signal processing, mathematical modeling and/or simulation expertise with respect to visual perception and/or systems design.

* Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications in high-impact journals (e. g., JoV, ICCP, CVPR, SIGGRAPH, etc.).
