Job Description

The Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) Research Team brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of AR and VR, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. The Agios team is looking for the next generation of scientists and engineers to tackle the most ambitious problems in wearable computing. The primary role of this internship is to conduct research in functional garments and textiles, with the goal of creating new research tools or prototypes that researchers or developers can use to solve some of our important research challenges. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Intern, Functional Garments and Textiles Engineer (PhD) Responsibilities

* Research, development, prototyping and testing of fabrics and materials for functional garments

* Conduct mechanical and electrical characterization of new materials and prototypes

* Fabricates textile based prototypes, contributes to independent design

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in the field of Textile Science, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering w/ some focus on functional garments or textile related fields

* 4+ years experience in materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or textile science

* 1+ years Prototyping experience, hand built is fine, demonstrates ability to make research samples

* Has demonstrated track record as a strong collaborator across disciplines

* Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-cultural collaboration

* Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications

* Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op

* Has proven track record attending ISWC, WEAR or MRS

* Other fabrication skills, 3D printing, laser cutting, molding etc.

* Understands fundamentals of garment construction, such as sewing or patternmaking

* Polymer Science, Electrical Engineering, and/or Mechanical Engineering / Robotics Fundamentals

* Experience with functional garments and textiles, OR Textile Science

* Proven track record of strong interdisciplinary research collaborations and delivery of research prototypes
