Job Description

The Liquid Crystal and Polarization Optics team at Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL Research) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to help conceive, build, and demonstrate novel head-mounted display systems based on polarization holograms. This is a role with 2 years fixed term. This individual will utilize skills in wave optics modeling, optical system design and prototyping. Candidates with significant experience in liquid crystal optics, polarization holograms, and/or diffractive optical elements design are encouraged. This is an opportunity to work with a broad range of cross-disciplinary collaborators to build new domain expertise. Some of those cross-disciplinary projects can be found on the Oculus blog, such as half dome 3: electronic varifocal systems, and polarization-based optical folding systems for AR/VR purposes.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist (PhD) Responsibilities

* Design, build, and demonstrate advanced AR/VR systems based on polarization holograms

* Collaborate with scientists and engineers across a variety of technical backgrounds

* Contribute to publications and patent applications in the field of AR/VR displays and optics

Minimum Qualifications

* Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Physics, Optical Science or related field

* Interpersonal experience with cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

* Solid knowledge in liquid crystal, diffraction, polarization and holography

* Basic knowledge in geometrical optics, color science, and visual optics

* Hands-on working experience of conducting experiments in clean room settings and optical labs, such as bench top AR/VR systems prototyping and/or polarization holography setups

* 3+ years of experience working with wave optics modeling tools (such as COMSOL, Lumerical, MATLAB or Python, etc.) and methods (such as FDTD, RCWA, etc.)

* 3+ years of research experience in polarization holograms, with advanced understanding in the physics, optical performance and material properties

* Proven communication skills

* Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications

* 3+ years of experience working with system-level prototyping work of AR/VR HMDs

* 3+ years of experience with test automation (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Mathematica)

* Experience in connecting ray-tracing modeling tools with physical optics & LC optics modeling tools (e.g., VirtualLab Fusion)

* Background in optimization methods, machine learning, and deep learning

* Proven track record of achieving significant results, as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences (e.g., SID, OSA, SIGGRAPH, and SPIE)
