General Summary:

This position is responsible for directing the overall employee communications efforts of Unum's Benefits organization, an organization of 3,000 employees throughout the United States and United Kingdom, including developing an internal communications strategy that best supports the company's business objectives. Reporting to the assistant vice president of corporate communications, this individual will have responsibility for the creation and implementation of integrated communications plans that are designed to enhance employee communications, strengthen the corporate culture and foster a more inclusive work environment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Direct the development of a comprehensive employee communications strategy for the Benefits organization
* Oversee the execution of this strategy, including the implementation of an integrated communications plan
* Working with the assistant vice president of corporate communications, serve as communications counsel to senior leaders as appropriate
* Lead in the development of key communications messages and ensure adherence of employee communications to these messages
* Establish vision and direction for employee communications vehicles, including the employee intranet and portal (Unum), and oversee launch and editorial direction of new vehicles as appropriate
* Oversee development of executive communications, including speeches and presentations
* May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

* Bachelor degree in journalism, public relations, communications or English is required
* Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a corporate, non-profit or PR agency communications environment
* Must possess outstanding written and verbal communications skills and news judgment
* Must be a seasoned news and feature writer
* Must be familiar with the creation and development of electronic and print publications
* Must have demonstrated, through previous positions, an ability to think strategically with an ability to develop communications solutions that meet business objectives
* Must have the ability to work successfully with senior leaders to provide communications counsel and support
* Previous experience in the insurance or financial services industry is preferred, but not required
