Summary
The Scientific Associate Director will serve as an integral member of the toxicology team that supports the early stage discovery and development of pharmaceuticals, including the identification, mechanistic investigation and management of safety risk from initial target identification to development candidate nomination stages. This position will provide appropriate leadership and scientific perspective to identify safety issues of potential drug candidates early in the drug development process. This scientist will lead scientific, administrative, and technical activities related to predictive and investigative toxicity testing, and serve as a toxicology team representative on discovery project teams. The Scientific Associate Director also will be responsible to assist the San Diego Discovery Toxicology management team in establishing and achieving long-term strategic goals and tactical objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the investigative toxicology laboratory and serve a subject matter expert.
* Represent toxicology function on discovery project teams for small and large molecules and manage safety risks identified for projects.
* Supervise and mentor scientific staff.
* Design and conduct in vitro and molecular toxicology experiments focused on identification of mechanistic basis of toxicity.
* Direct the development and application of pharmacodynamic markers in safety studies.
* Evaluate and implement novel in vitro toxicology models and assays.
* Conduct and/or manage in vitro toxicology screening.
* Contribute to identification of early target safety risk based on projected mechanism of pharmaceutical action, literature knowledge on pathways and/or toxicological profile of competitor drugs.
* Maintain in vitro and molecular toxicology expertise through organizational associations, literature review, continuing education and publications.
* Establish and maintain working relationship with key opinion leaders in the toxicology community, academicians, and key Bristol Myers Squibb staff.
Requirements
* PhD in Toxicology or a related discipline with a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience.
* Demonstrated competency working as a toxicology representative on project teams.
* Advanced knowledge of general, cellular and molecular toxicology principles.
* Experience conducting mechanistic investigative studies involving signal transduction pathways, proteomics and genomics.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills and computer proficiency.
* Demonstrated ability to solve complex scientific problems and excellent organizational skills.
* Proven record of working collaboratively with colleagues in other departments and on project teams.
* Must be a highly flexible, results oriented, independent self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
* Broad understanding of drug discovery and development in both early and late stage development and familiarity with regulatory approval process.
* Knowledge of the hematopoietic system and in vitro models of hematotoxicity.
* Analysis and interpretation of pharmacodynamic data in a nonclinical setting.
* Knowledge of biomarker discovery, and assay development and validation.
* Proven scientific/leadership experience such as working on teams and managing people and projects, commensurate with level.
