Sr. Manager, Operations- Madison, WI
The Sr. Manager, Operations (Madison, WI) reports to the Sr. Director of Operations and is a strategic partner in the manufacturing operations function, overseeing a growing organization of approximately 25 employees, and $10M+ of service and product revenue. This position is responsible for the execution of a diverse portfolio of screening services, custom biology projects, manufacturing of >350 cellular products used by drug discovery customers, both small batch and large scale cellular production, as well as the manufacturing and assembly of a sample prep product.
How will you make an impact?
The Sr. Manager ensures product manufacturing and services are executed with the highest level of quality in a safe and timely manner that will meet or exceed customer expectations. This position manages Biosciences Operations in Madison, WI and is responsible for direct management of supervisors, team leaders, and individuals that specialize in areas of biochemical assays, cell-based assays, and cell culture. This position is responsible for the oversight of hardware and software engineering, quality, and project management. The Sr. Manager is responsible for the performance of production teams including safety, quality, delivery, financials, and productivity. This position influences internal suppliers, support functions, sourcing, planning, procurement, quality, engineering, maintenance, R&D, NPI, product management, other groups/divisions, and other sites to create value that enhances the customer experience. The Sr. Manager is also responsible for the safety and facilities for all Life Sciences Group employees on the Madison Site (approximately 40 employees). This position provides influential leadership that ensures product planning, scheduling, sourcing, materials availability and equipment maintenance are effective in enabling the teams to achieve customer-focused and financial goals. The role drives the implementation of PPI-Lean Enterprise, is responsible for eliminating waste and improving flow, and for building a culture that is effective at root cause investigations and implementation of both corrective and preventive actions.

* Owns full responsibility for Madison Biosciences Operations successful execution of deliverables and on time delivery of products and services.
* Oversees and manages the organization to meet annual operating plan and financial objectives.
* Develops and executes short-term and long-term strategy for capacity and staffing levels, equipment and capital planning, flow and manufacturing footprint management, and program initiatives in support of division X-matrix while aligning to company policies/procedures.
* Establishes goals, sets priorities, drives KPIs, reviews performance, manages projects, and coordinates all related activities within the organization to drive focus towards meeting business objectives.
* Provides leadership guidance and support for Operations NPIs and service transfers.
* Lives the Thermo Fisher Scientific 4I Values of Integrity, Intensity, Innovation, and Involvement.
* Creates a culture where emotional intelligence, transparency, and trust are shared amongst all team members.
* Mentors, coaches, and develops direct reports and entire Madison Operations Team. Promotes individual development planning and career mapping.
* Acts as a plant wide business partner and member of Madison Site Steering Committee aligning/deploying resources towards the plants highest priority initiatives.
* During the COVID-19 Pandemic, manages the Madison Life Sciences Group response.
* Drives growth and continuous improvement (lean/six sigma) by leveraging the Practical Process Improvement (PPI) toolkit. Owns the Operations Team PPI funnel building and execution. Champions improvement projects and activities.
* Focuses team on using standardized work practices, leverages tiered huddles/daily management, and implements 5S principles. Provides leadership guidance during Gemba walks, Kaizen events, Management Reviews, etc.
How will you get here?
Education
* An advanced degree such as an MBA is a plus; BS or equivalent degree required.
Experience
* Minimum of 10+ years of progression in leadership positions of increasing responsibility, with a preference for experience in a services-oriented manufacturing setting requiring high reliance on effective use of laboratory equipment and integrated data management systems. Multi-site, global management experience is a plus.

* Knowledge, experience, or training in Lean techniques and proficient in process auditing. Possess a continuous process improvement mindset with the ability to effectively lead and manage change.
* Experience with life sciences industry, high-throughput screening, fluorescence-based assays, cellular product/protein manufacturing, and drug discovery is preferred.
* New product launch or new service launch experience is preferred.
* Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite.
